This is the first Joseon dynasty drama I watched since SBS Iljimae. So far so good.
My reaction : I like the guy who plays Taejong , but no one can ever beat Yoo Dong Geun's Taejong(Tears of Dragon) in my opinion.
I see the scholar guy from Geunchogo who was always scolding Ajikgi in this drama.

Watched the first two episodes. It hasn't been that interesting yet, but early episodes are mostly for setting up later conflicts. I hope they jump forward to the adult Jang Hyuk character in episode 3. I've had more than enough of listening to his younger self's squeaky screaming to last a lifetime. The kid just seems like a thug, who wants to beat everyone up. Don't like him.
I did like the scene where the young Sejong (Lee Do, I think they call him), finally stood up to his bloodthirsty father.

Lemme see, is the father, Taejong/Yi Bangwon going around killing in-laws again? Historically he's notable for this. He killed his brothers, his wife's family, justifying his actions as strengthening the monarch's power, much to his father's disgust, the founder of the Joseon dynasty. Furthermore to try prevent the influence of in-laws of having power over the courtn; history has shown through the influence of in-laws led to corruption in the court.

Yes, Sejong's father killed Sejong's father in law, and several uncles. There was also a list of other people he killed, but they didn't explain how or whether they were related to Sejong.
The drama seems to be setting it up as though Sejong's father is just trying to show his son some "tough love," even if it means he has to kill everyone his son has ever known, or thought about knowing. Which is not very credible.
I just want the story to jump forward to Sejong's creation of the Hangul, and the Jang Hyuk character investigating the murders.

Well, this is someone who killed his brothers thinking it was for his father, as we mentioned before. Also, a reason why he did that was to prevent the influence of in-laws of the court, something that led to corruption and decay of a dynasty. But no matter how you look at it, its screwed up. Your reaction to the other family members he killed, chuck? ^The scary part is that stuff actually happened.
Remember folks, if you're going to marry somebody, make sure this man is not your in-law.
Speaking of which, is the serial killings going to be linked to the development of hangul somehow? SOme guy goes around killing people who support hangul because they see it as against tradition (those are my speculations anyway)?

i must say,I have a lot of praise for the kid playing the lead character. He does a real good job in conveying rage. The fact that a 12-year old beats up adults for some reason is very appealing to me

This show is interesting and very tense. I hope they keep up the pace. I love the conversations between the Great King and King Sejong. Did he pass the throne to his son? If he did, why is he still ruling. I am impressed with Song Joon-Ki's portrayal of the young King as I didn't think he was that talented.
I agree with Chuck the kid annoys me to death but I think he is doing an ok job portraying his character. I just wish he would stop screaming! Lol How on earth is he able to pull down a grown man from a horse? ;D

Lol How on earth is he able to pull down a grown man from a horse? ;D Same reason he's able to beat up grown up adults. I find the idea of a kid being able to do that appealing Wonder how Chae-yoon's revenge is going to resolve? We all know that Sejong won't die from being killed. The scenarios I can think of is he finds it in his heart to forgive Sejong, or dies before he can even kill Sejong. THis revenge story stands out from most revenge stories because the target really isn't entirely at fault for what happened...its a misguided revenge that the viewer questions, rather than most revenges we find justified

Episode 4 was excellent. I really like Jang Hyuk, he's an excellent actor. I like recognizing actors from other dramas, too, and there are several here I've seen before. Mu Hyul, Sejong's personal bodyguard, was in Chuno, where he was Song Tae Ha's (Oh Ji Ho's) right hand man. The scholar who was hiding in Ban Chon, I forget his name, and then was pulled from his horse by the child and later killed - he was in Queen Seon Deuk, where he was Mishil's right hand man. That role suited him better than this one. Someone said Yoo Ah In was in episode 4? I dind't notice him, but I'll have to go back and check. I liked him in Sungkyunkwan Scandal, too. It'll be fun seeing Jang Hyuk's character exercising his Sherlockian powers to solve the murders. Perhaps it will turn into the case of the owl who didn't hoot.

Jang Hyuk is a master of expressing emotions, which is why he's so effective

The guy who plays that scholar is also playing a regular role as Sung Choong on MBC Gyebaek right now.
