Ep 33:
San’s mother tells him she was rewarding Song, who was happy to study in Qing (China). San thinks Song was heartless, leaving “without a word” {despite her sincere letter}. San, Song and Lady Hye take a family trip, and San takes the ministers with him (to shake them up). They are shook up.
It is cold and dark on the road to Qing, and there are many hardships, but only Song keeps cheerful. She is singled out for notice by Jeong, but she remains unsuspicious of him. {Because nobody bothered to tell her about him.} In Qing, Chobi, delighted with the opulence of their quarters and her first Chinese bed, chivvies Song into taking a tour of the marketplace. But when Song is presented at the painting academy, they refuse to take her (because she’s female). San’s grandfather intemperately lets his underling know that Song cannot return to Chosun NMW.
In San’s absence, the king, who seems to have had a stroke or some other incident, forgets he banished the queen and goes to visit her. He even asks to see Lord Kim, since he “hasn’t been around lately.” The Queen ponders the situation and goes to visit him next morning, but he verbally abuses and threatens her, having forgotten the visit. She orders her attendant to keep her mouth shut until she can figure it out.
Hyeoui comforts San, but all she gets is an earful of Song. She regrets, aloud, her inability to help, but he thanks her for being so sensitive to his needs and loving his friends as he does.
Dae-su gets drunk and beaten up by some weedy little guy in a bar who shows up with a smart guy. When San meets the two men, he hides his identity and bets on his head guard; the loser will bow to the winner. Unfortunately, the man’s martial fighting style is unknown to them, and the guard loses.
There goes that secret ladies' court system again. Scary.
