Ep 31:
The king tells Song about his failures with his son and San, and learns about San’s gender and class equality reforms (which are why she’s a painter). Later, when the palace sends a royal gift, everyone at Dowahseo believes Song will be a royal concubine, and she amuses herself by letting them. Chobi approves.
The uproar over San’s disappearance is concluded when Eunuch Nam finds him pouring his troubles out at his father’s tomb. San, depressed, rejects Yeong-jo’s settling upon him of partial authority to rule and the order to find out, with Insp Hong, all the conspirators. So Hong asks the three guards to help him reveal everything about the Noron. The head guard blathers to some gisaeng about Hong’s mighty power (this seems like it may be important later.)
The queen appears at a secret meeting called by Princess and is thoroughly snubbed by the Norons. She swears revenge.
San, getting drunk at a tavern, sends for Song and Dae-su, who convince him to go home. His mother and wife plead with him, and he finally promises to do better. He is surprised/pleased when his wife waits with him out in the cold, to support him. Next day, he tells his officers to look into enforcing the Equalization Policy (so non-Noron factions can get stronger) and to resolve tense foreign relations with the Qing, for the benefit of the people. San meets with Sir Choi and tells him the investigation into the “accident”—including Sir Choi--is still open. Choi tells Jeong; Jeong tells Princess he wants to go to Qing as an envoy to avoid scrutiny, and she agrees.
Lady Hyeoui pours out her heart to Lady Kim, who in turn sends out spies who “discover” that it was Song’s fault San got drunk, and that she’s met him several times. Lady Kim tells Hyeoui, who does not respond as she wishes. In frustration, Lady Kim secretly runs to Lady Hye, who summons both Song and Hyeoui (who throws a suspicious glance on Lady Kim).
