So I've seen eight episodes of Yae no Sakura on Dramafever, and I have to say, its boring. First it tells the same sotry of the events leading up to the Bakumatsu (arrival of the black ships, rangaku/Western Learning, sonno joi(revere the emperor expel the foreigners) blah blah blah blah blah blah)that I'm sure so many Japanese historicals have covered, including the girl trying to rise against gender norms (gee haven't seen that before). Speaking of the girl, I don't think she has much of a presence despite her being the lead. If anything, she's overshadowed by the whole political turmoil between the shogunate and imperial court and her brother's fight to spread Western sciences. WHile those events are important in leading up to the conflict that she will be involved, she feels more like a supporting character that a main protagonist. Also, things happen waaaay too slowly for forty eight minutes.

Its only gets good from episodes 24-30,being the fall of Aizu . You would be much better off watching the next one Gunshi Kanbee (Strategist Kanbei ) about Hideyoshi's top general or the new one (when it starts) Sanada Maru.

Judging on what you have to say about, sounds like this subject matter would have been alot better if it was alot shorter.

Every time NHK does a historical drama on a woman, they get a pretty actress and turn her into a butch thing, of course representing "the indomitable spirit of Japanese womanhood ". Some early episodes of Yae are saved by The Shinsengumi (the real Last Samurai) who dominate every scene they are in, by ep 30 we see the end of the Samurai era and it gets really boring . By contrast the next one should appeal to fans of Jingbirok as it covers the life of Kuroda Kanbei and depicts the fates of many featured in that drama. The most recent one Hana Moyu is even worse than Yae. covering the sister of Yoshida Shoin and wife of Kusaka Gensui most of the action happens off screen . And here is the NHK page for the new one, in English as well, again this will appeal to fans of Jingbirok for the same reasons as Kanbei. www.nhk.or.jp/sanadamaru/en/about/index.html

I'm kind of late weighing in on this. but I agree. Gunshi Kanbee is really well done, and definitely worth watching. I have not watched any episodes of Sanada yet.

I just began Taira no Kiyomori. I think this is the first J-Historical I've come across that has nothing to do with the coming of the black ships and the Bakumatsu. Honestly, its kind of refreshing to me. The first episode is pretty dumb though.
Another thing of note. As far as opening songs go, Korean historicals win for me.

I have been watching Sanada Maru and enjoying it. I think it's interesting the way NHK takes the same era and plays it over and over, looking at it from the viewpoint of a different family, with different spins on the major historical figures. For example, the main characters in Tenchijin are portrayed really differently here. I've been putting off watching the final episodes of Sanada, because they aren't subbed and my Japanese is still pretty weak (and I think it will not end well).

I watched this one for a while, but stopped because the main character was such an immature brat. But then again, he was immature . You'll have to let me know if it gets better.

I'm at the lead up to the Hogen Rebellion. So much better after around 15 to 17 episodes.

Sageuk i like Taira No Kiyomori, though the same events are covered much better in Yoshitsune (2005), probably my fave depiction of the whole Taira vs Minamoto (Genji vs Heike )conflict . Yoshitsune is very easy to find, as is Shinsengumi (2004) which is the best of all the recent bakumatsu dramas (Atsuhime is decent).
Mugwump i just finished Sanada Maru, Subs have been stuck at 34 for weeks, so i just took the plunge, and you guessed correctly on the ending . Also worth watching is the 1985 drama Sanada Taiheike, its more or less the same story, bigger budget and better writing . Kusakari who plays the father plays Nobushige/Yukimura in this, its fully subbed and is on line in a lot of sites .
The new Taiga Onna Joshu Naotora is about the only female daimyo in the Sengoku (Warring) era . She was the head of the Ii clan who would later serve the Tokugawa.

This is the only Yoshitsune material I managed to find, and its definitely not the one you're talking about, dramacool.io/drama-detail/minamoto-yoshitsune-1990EDITL\: Never mind, I spoke too soon. Found episodes withsubs on youtube. The first episode is missing though. Shame, because I wanted to see how the Heiji Rebellion plays out in that one and compare it to the one in Taira no Kiyomori. BTW, Taira no Kiyomori got so much better when it reached the Hogen and Heiji Incidents. I've no idea why, but the Taira-minamoto feud has piqued my interest.

Its a really great feud, and pretty much started the military samurai era, when Kiyomori took the power from the Emperor, Yoshitsune of course while trying to be somewhat sympathetic to the Taira's shows the Minamoto viewpoint, especially how cold blooded Yoritomo was . Try looking for it as Yoshitsune, it was up on almost every site .
Dramafever has Atsuhime and that is pretty decent.
I just watched the first episode of Onna Joshu Naotora/ Lady Warlord Naotora(no subs yet), its much better than expected, my interest though is more for the depiction of Nobunaga and Ieyasu as young men, also Ieyasu's first wife Sukihime who was forced to commit suicide along with their son for plotting against Nobunaga with the Takeda .
