It's 1762. The 38th year of King Yeong Jo's reign. Crown Prince Jang Heon is being charged with treason. King Yeong Jo orders him to get inside a chest. Jang Heon attempts to kill himself by banging his head against concrete steps when his son shows up. He pleads with his grandfather to spare with father to no avail. The young prince is taken away. Both he and Crown Princess Hye Bin can only watch as Jang Heon gets in the chest. King Yeong Jo demotes Jang Heon and Hye Bin.
It's 1776. The first year of King Jeong Jo's reign. Upon rising to the throne, King Jeong Jo proclaims himself to be son of Prince Sado [Crown Prince Jang Heon] even though talking about him is strictly forbidden. This angers many in the royal family and court officials.
A group of assassins break into the palace late at night in an attempt to kill King Jeong Jo. All but one of the assassins are killed. Several men are charged with treason and killed in connection with the assassination attempt.
It's 1795. The 19th year of King Jeong Jo's reign. King Jeong Jo's reforms have earned him the spite of merchants and Noron party. There's rumors that Jeong Jo plans to move the capital to Hwaseong. He puts Jung Yak Yong in charge of the upcoming procession and ceremony in Hwaseong.
The Noron party meets to welcome back Kim Jung Soo. They fill him in on King Jeong Jo's reforms and plans. Jeong Jo gives Kim Jung Soo the position of Chief State Councilor.
The Supreme Commissioner of Gyeongmo Palace, Chae Je Gong, resigns. It's rumored that he mentions Prince Sado in his resignation. Kim Jung Soo and Shim Hwan Ji of the Noron party urge Jeong Jo to charge him with treason. To shut them up, Jeong Jo shows them the document. In there, Chae Je Gong tells Jeong Jo to find the previous king's secret will and uncover the truth behind Prince Sado's death. The Noron party take this as a threat from Jeong Jo to not interfere with his reforms.
Hong Jae Cheon meets Kim Han Ju, Queen Dowager's cousin, hoping that he'll help with an assassination attempt on King Jeong Jo while he travels to Hwaseong. Jae Cheon wants Han Ju to find out when the procession will commence. Han Ju tells Jae Cheon to leave.
Moon In Bang meets with Jang In Hyung hoping to get him to join their cause against King Jeong Jo.
Jeong Jo's servants are preparing his bed when they start screaming.
