Ep.24:
After the fortune teller (FT) "sees" that San may die, San follows him around his farm and learns he is inventing new implements to address particular farming problems in Chosun. San gets permission to take some of the FT's notebooks. Later, San and his mother meet in the courtyard and assure each other of their fealty and that they'll persevere no matter what.
Through a series of misinterpretations, Song thinks Chobi has painted a portrait of Sponsor Lee because she "likes" him, and is bullied into setting up a meeting between Chobi and her lover. Of course, Chobi really means Dae-su. (Later at the lovers' meeting, Chobi gets the surprise of her life when Sir Kim shows up and tells her they must "forget their love" or his wife will kill them.)
Mr. Lee, it turns out, gets a job through Uncle of painting gisaeng portraits at their house. There the two see Scribe Hong, now a shate-carrier. Uncle tells Dae-su about this, who is shocked and incredulous.
Princess sends courtiers to pick up Song, and Hyeoui sees them bringing her into the palace. Princess bullies Song for a bit then orders her (over protest) to become her pet painter. Sec. Jeong sees Song as he arrives; they both look a bit nonplussed. As Song leaves the palace, she remembers where she met Jeong before. In Hyeoui’s chambers, Lady Kim reports that Song is a liar and clearly working with Princess.
Jeong tells Princess he found out Lord Kim is working with the royal arsenal, and believes he plans to assassinate San in front of everyone at the festival. Princess is shocked, but only because if this plan succeeds, she and Jeong will be cut off from power. Jeong assures her that will not happen.
Sir Chae and San discuss the FT’s writings. They agree he may be a dangerous lunatic, but San feels the FT is a kindred spirit and that it is more dangerous to crush free-thinkers than to let them run loose.
Dae-su plus Two locate Hong, and they end up at the gisaeng house, where the two head guards are "regulars" who get a cheap rate because they are soldiers. There, they discuss the whole FT/assassination possibility. Hong sees Lord Kim and insults him, but for some reason is not beaten.
Princess visits the Queen and lets her and Sir Choi know she is suspicious and angry that she's not in on their plot. After, Choi wants to know why Queen is excluding Princess, and Queen says Princess wants too much power and when she gets it, she'll try to install Jeong as king, changing the dynasty. Queen ain’t gonna let that happen. Princess must be restrained.
San visits the royal farm lands and gets them to test out some of FT's methods. Sir Chae reports to Yeong-jo that San is going out among the people to find out what they think. Yeong-jo says that barn burned already, but maybe it’ll help San on his next farm. (In his next life?) Later, Dae-su and San visit FT, where San pesters him to lend his equipment for San's experimentation. He tries to win over the man with his sparkling personality.
Dae-su privately asks FT if the fortune he told for San is true. The man says he saw a vision of an explosion in a crowd, and the time is soon. Dae-su runs to Hong and they discuss the prediction. When Dae-su mentions "crazy people," Hong thinks of Lord Kim. He tells D-S to find out what Lord Kim is working on and report back. Also, plus Two should trail Jeong and Lord Kim.
At Dowahseo, the painters must make twice as many good fortune paintings as they did the year before, so Chief Park has the Damo trace the men’s paintings on special paper. He tells Song to make sure they do a good job, so the Damo can have more opportunities in the future.
San, all oblivious, is having a good time because his enemies are quiet. He sees Song in the distance, and goes to tell her she brought him to his senses with the damo paintings. He jokes around with her; she misunderstands; they clear it up, laugh and sedately horse around a bit.
Dae-su reports to Hong that Lord Kim is in charge of the festivities. Dae-su mentions fireworks, and Hong appears to realizes the danger.
Lord Kim receives weapons-grade gunpowder from a lackey, who leaves. San comes along and wants to know what Kim is doing there alone and what he has in his hand.
