This thread is for discussion of episode 1 of 49 Days. Please check the drama info & schedule thread for more info and rules on how to avoid spoilers and such.
---------------------------------------------------------
Ji Hyun is engaged to Min Ho. Min Ho works for Ji Hyun's father. They met when Ji Hyun got lost hiking and Min Ho rescued her. Ji Hyun's father wants to rush the wedding so they're getting married in a week.
Han Kang is their friend. He went to school with Ji Hyun. She considers him a friend but their relationship is a bit awkward.
Yi Kyung is poor and works at a convenience store. She attempts to commit suicide by walking in front of a truck but is saved by Kyung Bin. This caused a multi-car wreck which Ji Hyun was involved in.
Ji Hyun falls into a vegetative state. Because it wasn't her time to die, Death [or Scheduler as he likes to be called], gives Ji Hyun 2 options. She can go to heaven [afterlife, etc] or return to the world of the living. In order to go back, she has to first take over the body of a living person and find 3 people who truly love her [meaning Ji Hyun] within 49 Days. These 3 people can't be related to Ji Hyun and must shed pure tears for her. If she does this, she can return to the world of the living. Ji Hyun chooses the 2nd option.
Death instructs Ji Hyun to take over Yi Kyung's body. When Ji Hyun asks why, he simply answers that they're both connected. Ji Hyun doesn't know that Yi Kyung was involved in her accident.
---------------------------------------------------------
I don't like the term Scheduler so I'll just refer to him as Death. This is an interesting take on the concept [or idea] that people have a set [or predetermined] life span. But, that certain factors can come into play and change your life span.
You would think this kind of a drama would be about a mean girl learning how to be nice, but Ji Hyun is actually a likeable character. She doesn't seem to be mean, at least not on purpose. I guess it's going to be more about Ji Hyun having to adapt to a life that's very different from the one she had before. It'll be interesting to see if Yi Kyung finds out about Ji Hyun and they somehow communicate with each other.
One question I would have about the 49 days and having to take over someone's body is, what if the person dies within those 49 days? As we saw with Ji Hyun, even with a set life span, that doesn't mean you can't die at any time. Plus Yi Kyung already attempted to kill herself. So, do you just get a new body and continue? Or is the whole thing over if the person dies?
