Ep.12:
Everyone is shocked and upset that San declares the men innocent, refuses to conduct the trial, and also directly tells Yeong-jo that he’s refusing a royal order.
At their secret tavern meeting, Jeong and scribe Hong (I know he’s more than that, but scribe will do) size each other up. Jeong tells him there’s a job open and offers it to him (Jeong is in charge of such assignments). Hong says he needs more time to check out whether Jeong is a tiger or merely a dog (worth following). Jeong gives him three days, then tells his flunkie to follow Hong in case he pulls a fast one.
Outside San’s quarters, Lady Hyeoui, who has come to exhort him, overhears San telling his mother that he can’t kill others to save himself, and promising that he’ll live no matter what. Hyeoui turns away so he won’t see her cry.
At Princess’s place, she tells Sir Choi that San didn’t take the way out offered to him by Yeong-jo, which proves that he believes Yeong-jo killed an innocent Sado. At Yeong-jo’s office, San pleads to prove the men’s innocence in 5 days. Y-J is pretty upset that San still thinks Sado was innocent, and in a fury, gives him 3 days or else the men will be executed and San deposed. San is then kicked out.
San summons the demoted guard and the head guard. He surprises them by not only knowing their names, but their military strengths, also. He assigns them to find out how the palace was infiltrated, and by whom, the night of the explosion. At Dowahseo, Eun Nam asks the chief painter to find out which artist painted the intruders’ detailed map (only an artist could have).
Uncle, in fear of his own life, hides when Scribe Hong comes to the tavern looking for Dae-su. The jilted tavern owner points Uncle out in spite. Dae-su paints the secret code for Hong, who tells them that San was framed and Minister of War Han was in on it (he was the guy who sent the code). Dae-su, of course, wants to rush off to the police, but Hong points out he has no evidence and would be arrested himself. Hong has a plan, and Dae-su declares he’ll do it and get the bastards himself.
Dae-su and a reluctant Uncle spy on Minister Han’s steward, who goes out to buy a book on military strategy. Later, they follow him to his girlfriend’s house. The next day, they follow him to a granary, where he buys a shockingly huge amount of food.
Sponsor Lee dreams about discovering how good Forger Cho’s obscene paintings are, but wakes before he can see. All the painters are asked to look at all maps painted in the past and by present artists, which are thousands, to match handwriting . After their chief leaves, they decide to do a sloppy job at this because it’s a large task and they’re lazy and spoiled. Song looks upset.
San and his men inspect the bodies of the guards and intruders, and learn they must have been well-trained. Then San finds some grasses in their boots.
Queen calls a conspirator meeting. They’re all, “we won, we won,” but she points out that if San becomes king, it could be a revenge bloodbath like with Prince Yunsan. So they cannot rest until San is deposed.
Visiting the prisoners, San learns the conspiracy pact was supposedly signed on a day when the “leader” attended a party thrown by Yeong-jo. Still, he begs San to capitulate and kill them. San wants them to live to protect him. Later, he learns that no one else will admit they were at the party.
At Dowahseo, the painters have lazily looked carelessly through the maps. Song reminds Sponsor Lee that she does all his work and asks him a favor. He takes her to the locked map room, which contains confidential documents. If she’s found there, she’ll be arrested. She starts looking.
Hong visits Dae-su, who thinks he learned nothing from following the steward and is angry. When Hong finds out about the food, he is angry with Dae-su; obviously, they would need so much food for an army. By bribing the rice merchant’s man, Dae-su learns where the grain was going. Dae-su has doubts about Hong’s brains, but then he sees the steward re-loading all the food into carts from a merchant’s inn and climbs into one of the carts. There, he hears the steward tell his men to “take care of” the artist (forger Cho). The train of carts takes off, with Dae-su in tow.
At night, Sponsor Lee ineptly searches Forger Cho’s storeroom. He discovers many copied obscene paintings, and then he finds a similar map to the one the head painter showed them. He steals this, leaving a candle in the storeroom. Forger Cho returns home and finds he’s been searched. Someone is also shown spying at Cho's house.
Sponsor Lee runs back to Dowahseo, where Song has been discovered in the map room. Dae-su sneaks around the conspirators’ encampment and sees them training.
The Queen serves some porridge to Yeong-jo and tells him he looks unwell, he should call for a physician. He says, I’m fine, but you look bad. She tells him she’s upset over San’s shenanigans. She manages to say San is guilty while saying he is not. Later, Yeong-jo goes to tell San that he only has one day (a fly-by scolding).
The head painter brings the map found by Mr. Lee to San, who goes with his men to Forger Cho’s house, only to find blood all over the storeroom. Dae-su runs back to town. Instead of finding Hong, Dae-su runs to the police and begs them to go to the encampment. Off Jeong comes and demands to know the story, but then realizes that Dae-su is staring at his own assistant standing at his side; but Dae-su doesn't really know him it seems.
At Cho’s house, San finds some of the grass he found earlier. He wants a swamp; the clumps are mud and water chestnut, and there hasn’t been any rain. His two guards know the swamp and tell him about it (Lower Hill). Meantime, Dae-su is telling all to Off Jeong, who pretends to help him, asking him to draw a map. But Jeong signals the steward. Dae-su receives a special escort home. He goes to pee, and the men draw their swords and follow him into the grass.
Off Jeong sends the steward to warn the conspirators at Lower Hill, as well as Princess. Then he goes in to talk to the police chief, who thinks Dae-su is a loony. He gives the map to Jeong and they part as friends. Jeong is surprised, in the yard, to see the supposedly dead Dae-su, accompanied by San, who smilingly demands Jeong’s business at the bureau.
