synopsis Ep.11:
The cooperation between the Social Dept. (“SD”) and the Political Dept (“PD”) is short-lived, as News Boss has another job for SD—make Taesok’s weekend spotlight report project an hour-long, standalone show (“like 60 Minutes”) called In-Depth Report (IDR). Taesok gives his people their assignments; if they don’t come up with good stories for IDR they’re in trouble. Wujin (who does not want to) and Myung-eun (who definitely does) will compete to be the host of IDR. Ahn and News Boss want Taesok to host, but he is embarrassed and thinks it’s inappropriate. The oldest reporter (I’ll call him “sex toy guy” – STG) does a story on sellers of “adult toys” who apparently are handing out something in water containers, maybe gasoline? (Don’t know if this develops later in show.) W & M-E (1) report on people who adopt children in order to qualify for condos, and (2) interview Vietnamese mail order brides who are being abused or were otherwise lied to about their spouses. Wujin fails both these tests compared with M-E. Test 2 was to keep from showing emotion; Wujin wonders why she shouldn’t and she and T have a nice discussion about being a human being and a reporter at the same time. M-E tells W she’d better do a good job because she wants it to be fair, and they shake hands (aww). Test 3 is to read all newspapers from two days and do a cue sheet for the evening news by 5 p.m. Even though ME is faster and has flashier headlines, W wins because hers is more realistic to what is in the news and she’s a better organizer. For test 4, they are given a news report about high commuter costs due to the rise in fuel prices. They must come up with a closing and decide how much of themselves to show in the story. M-E, who is growing on me, practices using W’s little frog song from when they were anchor candidates and gets a nice make-up job; her video compares how much money you’ll save with a bike ride opposed to a car. W gets the camera crew to show her putting in some sweat equity, bike-riding a commuter route and comparing the time saved or lost—concludes, ride the bike! PD’s Jung says M-E is better because looks are everything. SD’s Ahn says Wujin is better because a reporter should work for the news, not sit around like the PD. (Har.) Ahn’s assistant says News Boss prefers W’s video. Jung accuses them of “camaraderie” (collusion, apparently). It seems Wujin won, so it’s two/two. In News Boss’s office, with Ahn, Jung & Taesok looking on, W and M-E stand in front of News Boss’s desk, who gives them their last assignment. “Your assignment is: THIS!” (showing mysterious photo we don’t see)
My comments:
I thought it was a nice touch, when T is telling the girls (on assignment 3 or 4) some info they’d obviously already know, and Juhee tells him, “Keb, they’re not rookies.” So WE get the info, and the show doesn’t look stupid. I also loved where M-E—in the bike video, all cool and collected—tells the folks, save the money for your wedding fund! Funny.
