Just kidding. I know it's Jeong-jo. I was noticing, however, how different the story is being told about him than in, say, King & I. Also, in King & I, this same dowager queen was a motherly, benevolent (and SANE) character. I think, also, that Jeong-jo's family was the subject of Yi San--the prince in the rice chest was his father, right? (I have not watched all of Yi San yet.) How many other dramas cover this territory? For instance, Dae Jang-geum starts out in the reign of Jeong-jo and ends after the death of his younger son (the Im Ho king).
Just thought this might be an interesting topic--dramas featuring Jeong-jo.

Yi yi yi. I got that mixed up, didn't I? I realized after I posted that, closed down the computer, was reading a book before going to sleep...I'm conflating Jungjong and Jeongjo, aren't I. Sorry, I don't have access to my timeline and got my kings mixed up.
Jungjong was the king in King & I and early part of Jang-geum.
Jeongjo was the prince/king in Yi San and Painter. Right?

Yah! What is the fascination with that guy (Jeong-jo)? My timeline says, he reigned only four years, from 1776 - 1800, there was a cultural renaissance and he attempted, but failed, at reforms. (It's spelled Jung-jo there.) Also according to my timeline, Jung-jong is not the king whose wife, the mother of Prince Yunsan, was executed by drinking poison, but rather, the king who succeeded Yunsan. The king who married that woman was Sung-jong (according to my timeline, which I got from the King & I's excellent info pamphlet). So I had that ALL the way screwed up.
That certainly is a lot of movies/shows about one guy. I mean, he's cute and all (oh LOL I mean the actor) but really.

Well several reasons being of course (1)Dad stuffed in grain box for not using his loaf (sorry )and keeping a low profile when he should have made him self obscure for a wee bit . (2)He was a great patron of the arts (3)Even by today's warped standards the man was a great liberal who did the right thing and tried to help the working classes ,as well as the poor ,he opened up the class system so lower classes could serve in govnt ,and he fought Joseon's answer to the Gop being the Noron's . (4)Tragic love story (5)He died a mysterious death after 24 years on the throne ,there is more than a hint that he was murdered by the Queen Dowager and his own mother who placed political party over family . (6)considering the whole dynasty has been one walking disaster after another ,a whole slew of weak Kings dominated by corrupt officials and scheming wives and concubines ,the only exception to the rule of 27crap monarchs are Taejong ,Sejong ,Sejo (despite a bloody usurpation he carried on dads work )than we have to wait until the 18 th century until Jeong-Jo . (7)Sejong and Jeong-Jo are really the two bright lights in the whole 500 year Joseon Dynasty ,sorry Dong Yi fans Sukjong was a big loser too .

D'oh! I was misreading his reign from 1776-1880, not 1776-1800! That is 24 years, isn't it! That makes more sense now. He sounds really cool. LOL.

Didn't Yeongjo, Jeongjo's grandpa started reforms for the sangmin? He brought back the sinmungo and took the trouble to listen to what people had to say. I would say his grandson followed his example and did it better.

I bought a book called the Memoirs of Lady Hye-gyong, which is a relatively recent recompilation of that lady's writings. She was Prince Sado's wife and King Jeong-jo's mother, and she includes an apologia of the rice chest incident. I'm just started on it, but I'm very excited to have it because I've been confused by that incident for some time now, there seem to be conflicting stories (especially for dramatic purposes).

That rice chest came in various sizes in different sageuk that I'm always wondering over it. It's difficult to read the account (my imgaination going overdrive ). I wished Yeongjo had simply exiled his son rather than do that to him.

There's a drama about Crown Prince Sado in the ninties, made by Lee Byung-hoon. Im Ho, who was the king in DJG, plays Crown Prince Sado.
In this scene, is when he is put in the rice chest.

Thanks for the link Sageuk. ^^ Most of the historical dramas depicted Prince Sado as the victim of political intrigues, none hinted at his mental instability (as far as I know). However, the memoirs indicted otherwise. Found a portrait of King Jeongjo. This is the first time I see this portrait. P.S. OT but I just found out how to write my name in Hangeul. My middle name is one of YB's pen name: Hye.

@sageuk--that's good old Park Geun-hyung as Sado's father, right? He's so great. What is the name of the drama? griffin -- Hye there. lol. I don't think he could just let him wander around raping people, if that's what he really was up to, I think he either had to lock him up or kill him, and as you know, he couldn't just have him executed. Horrible. Bo

Was it so difficult to make up some plausible reason and remove Sado from sucession? After all, Sado did take over the reins for several years. Yeongjo could have simply declared misrule, stripped Sado of his title, exiled him and announced his grandson as crown prince. What's so dificult?
I still cannot fathom why Yeongjo went to the extreme but it seemed that he had very little accord with his own son and knew nothing of his illness. Even so. Oh well. *shrug*

The literal translation for the title is Path of a Great King, but saome english titles have it called Path of a Great Dynasty. Makes sense considering Yeongjo wanted to raise Sado as a great king, but a parent's greed can ruin a child. Perhaps because he wanted his heir to be a perfect Confucian monarch was very strict with him and perhaps for some reason did not like him as well. And this worsened his mental illness or maybe the stress and fear of his father brought on the symptoms.
I remember reading somewhere the reason why he couldn't have just stripped him of his title. I don't remember the details, but it had something to do with the legitimacy of Sado's son as crown prince
