i have a feeling i may end up in conversations with myself but decided to try anyway. it won't be the first time that has happened, and i doubt the last. ;D this historical drama started on WMBC a couple of weeks ago. so far i like it very much. there are a lot of familiar faces and i think that adds to the appeal of these dramas for me. the crown prince is one of those.....he was a reluctant king-to-be in the Iron Empress and i suspect here as well. also there is CCH......AOW fans will recognize that (i cannot remember his character name in this) and there is a former superior general from AOW as well (again correct names escape). my beloved archfiend is missing, however. BUT, one of his former 'sons' is in this drama. i thought it was interesting the way they "aged" the young boy into the young man. his mentor looks very familiar but i have yet to place him. i hope there will be more action/battles, etc soon. but even the background and politics have been interesting so far. hopefully there are others who will want to add to this and discuss things as we move along.

i just visited the AOW tangents board to check out a picture...i had been thinking that the young prince's mentor was the former KDS....and i think that is correct.

Am glad you are enjoying this drama. What I found striking about it was the soundtrack, am not sure where you are episode wise, but there is a song "To the Sun" that is played which moves me to tears-- like Insooni's "Goose's Dream". It took me awhile to shake the actress who plays the empress, as she was the goofy sister-in-law from Heart of Nineteen. In all, it is good, sometimes it drags, but don't they all, and you will realize how important a good clock and alphabet (Luther translating the Bible into German is nothing compared to Sejong creating Hangal) to the security of a nation.

I wanted to watch this drama. Unfortunately for me I only saw a little bit of it. On the TV at home, I saw the part when young Sejong confronts his older brother and says that he's going to fight for the throne. I later watched the first few parts of the first episode on viikii. It was interesting. Too bad the rest of the links were broken. My best bet is eworld or some megaupload links. Grumble

ginnycat, thanks for all the information. when i have more time i will happily check it out.
that son you are referring to is the archfiend's son, the one i mentioned recognizing from AOW. seems he is a creep in this as well.
--------------
firearrow, thanks for repyling. we just saw episode 7 on sunday. i liked episode 6 better, it had more action.
i do not like the aged crown prince, but i suppose that is because we need the eventual 'sejong' to be the better person. the music so far has been quite nice, will look forward to that one piece you mention.
i didn't see the previous show the empress was in so i will have no problem with her playing this character.
nice comment about the clock and alphabet.
---------------
dramafreak, sorry you missed this. the historicals are the only ones i watch and my station has started running a modern drama in between....those months just drag by, while the others when the historicals are playing go at the speed of light.

Historically speaking the Crown Prince and his younger brother found that they were unfit to be successors so they left the palace so that their youngest brother could succeed. So I guess in history the Crown Prince was nicer. No such conflict between the princes was recorded, but you gotta have conflict in a drama, so I guess the liberty was necessary. I'm going to guess that throughout the course of the drama, the Crown Prince realizes he can't beat his youngest brother and ultimately forfeits.
And the song that plays sounds like a "You Raise me up" knockoff

Hey, luvarch et al! I've been away for a while, cruising the NY/NJ and Philly boards, but it's good to be back.
I'm delighted to have an historical to watch, given we only get 2 dramas here in NYC. This one which was aired in 2008, seems like a winner, altho ANY historical is a winner after IE.
It's still early days for me and I'm a bit confused. What happened to the reluctant prince from IE? I thought he was heir to the throne. I missed Epi 5 or 6. Did he leave or die in that one? I'm also confused about who is mother to whom. Is the consort or the queen Sejong's ma? A lot of the side intrigues, the plotting ministers, has me reeling. I guess it'll all fall into place by Epi 10 or 15.

The You Raise Me Up" knock off is: So Won (Wish) and is sung by K. Will- and they do sound similar. The soundtrack will get more varied and grand as the King ages, play the CD when something stirring and bold is needed around the house.

Great that you guys in NY/NJ are getting to see this series. It’s a terrific one. Absolutely top-notch. And they did very good job as far as historical accuracy. It’s not perfect, of course, and they took some dramatic license like all of the historicals do. But when I was learning the history while watching the series, I was surprised by how closely they stuck to historical facts even when it would have been much more convenient for the series to ignore them or change them.
Funny you should mention the pop music...There was some strong difference of opinion about that when the series was running here in Chicago. I thought it was a huge mistake to be putting pop songs in a historical; they sound cheesy and completely out of place. I don’t know why people think everything today has to have a bass line and a drum beat to it, but other historicals haven’t resorted to it and I thought it was the only one big mistake that the series made. But not everybody agreed.
Anyway, I hope you guys keep posting as the series goes on; I’m interested to know what you think. Don’t miss a minute of Queen Wongyeong; she’s the best character in any of the historicals I’ve seen, and the actress playing her was fantastic. Very complex character, and you can totally feel in the performance how she’s being pulled in different directions. Worth watching the series just for her.

The screenwriter is the same screenwriter of Immortal Yi Soon Shin for those who don't know. She has often received criticisms for historical inaccuracies in the drama, such as the deal with Won Gyun. Sejong is one of the more accurate historicals? I guess the criticisms were too much for her.

Hi everyone - I am also watching this one on WMBC in the NY/NJ area - and I thank ajk for the summaries as I am still a bit confused.....nothing new about that. Also I am not sure how much of this is being cut - it runs about 53 minutes more or less. With IE about 15 minutes was cut - that is when I discovered ajk's summaries.... We also have another venue for those of us watching on WMBC if anyone cares to join there as well.... eastnewyorker.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general - I hope that was okay to post.....

hey puppy and maranyc...didn't know there was a ny/nj board until i saw your posts....i just joined there. thanks for the info.
i am a bit confused too, but i think things will become clearer.
the crown prince will need to decide if his brother is an advisor or threat....will be interesting to see how he handles that. he is obviously given to rash behavior.
his open opposition to his father isn't too smart either.

LOL maranyc--we want as much info available as possible. Thanks for letting everyone know about it. Queen Wongyeong is played by Choi Myeong-gil, who also starred in the 2002 drama Empress Myeong-seong (which I have been longing to see and is not available). Here's her dramawiki profile: wiki.d-addicts.com/Choi_Myung_GilIn case you wanted to know. (I looked it up because I mistook her for Kim Mi-sook.) Bo

In case anyone is interested: when I was searching to see if I could find this online to watch, I came across a web site at www.koreanhero.net/kingsejong and they had a "article" about this king and other things about Korea. Did not have time to invetisgate it a lot, but thought it would be worth passing it along
