I don't speak Korean at all, but I do speak Spanish and French (as some may have guessed from my nom d'post), so I have a pretty good ear for accents in general. My question is this: do various characters have different regional/socioeconomic/class-based accents?
For example, Mi-ryung's mother and the new Mrs. WK have very harsh, whiney-sounding but almost gutteral accents, nowhere near as melodious as those of Sun-joo and Min-joo. Some have accents so soft they sound almost Japanese.
Are any of my fellow foristas here knowledgable on this topic?

Mi-ryung's mother and the new Mrs. WK have heavy regional accents. The other characters don't have accents or at least I cannot detect it.

Maybe they emigrated from the countryside into the city. They have to have accents, just look at the people here in the U.S., Chicagoans have different accents than New Yorkers and we definitely would have different accents than people from say...Omaha.

In the Masterpiece Theater show "I, Claudius", there is a scene where the Pretorian Guards annoint Claudius as Emperor. Since, historically, these guards were working class, the actors playing them had Cockney accents. It sounded quite bizarre here in the States.

This is off the topic but "I, Claudius" was a great series.

Soju and Cadie... still a little "OT" for this "accents" thread... wow - I Claudius - i thought was one of the best historical dramas / epics ever made... EWG is still my fav Korean series [but with YH being a very very close 2nd but EWG prod quality IMO was as high as I Claudius... Betz from Philly

;DYeah, Soju, I got a laugh out of your description of that accent! I think you meant he talked kinda like the guy who sings "Up Where We Belong". What's his name, Joe Springer? Or is it some other kind of spaniel? Cacacacaca! (all right, I never said I had an ear for accents)

Betz from Philly, YH must be my favorite Korean series since I watch it so religiously every weekday. I now deeply regret missing EWG.

What is EWG an abbreviation for. I keep trying to think what it could be, but I haven't come up with anything!

Betz, I watch YH in Los Angeles. EWG aired a while back, maybe a year ago, in LA but I never watched it. Can't remember why..maybe it didn't have subtitles. There are two Korean stations here but only three shows with subtitles.

Hi Cadie,
I watch in Los Angeles also, and you're right -- pretty slim pickin's for those of us in L.A. who enjoy subtitled Korean dramas. I also remember the series "Emperor Wang Guhn" from about a year ago, and yes, it DID have subtitles. Terrific series!

Mikey, thanks for the info about subtitles for EWG. I will have to hunt down the nearest Korean video store to watch this great epic. I can pick up a few words and phrases when watching YH but the historical dramas are another story. I can't make sense of anything I hear.
