Yoon Jang-hwa's life (but mainly Kang Tae-yun)
When KTY went off to meet with Choi Pil-du in the last episode, in so doing he blew off Jang-hwa whom he had promised to eat with. She is ticked off about this, and in the mood to get back at her husband. As she is going down in the elevator, Im Hyeok gets on with her. She apparently hasn't had much to do with him for the past year, and he is angry and says that he hates a "fickle woman". But YJH feels like breaking the rules today. She says that the good thing about a fickle woman is that she can change her mind, and she leads him off to smooch in the empty area that they used before.
Meanwhile, KTY calls her and, as she doesn't pick up, leaves a message on her voicemail that he is going to be in a rural area for a few days. He then arranges to meet the hoodlum/investigator that Pil-du thinks so much of. But he then goes to the pool hall in question with his whole security team. The hoodlum recognizes him and tries to get away, but the security team has the exits covered, and KTY gets him and utterly slugs him and is ready to beat the heck out of him. "Where is my mother?" he demands, enraged. "Where did you take her things?" "Chungcheong province!" he blurts out.
The hoodlum, fearful and cooperative, shows KTY the bus stop where he picked up Ms. B. He then remembers that she had told the bus driver she was trying to get to Yeonamjeong. KTY knows where that is. He remembers that when he was a kid his mother would go to Yeonamjeong to pray for him to pass his tests, because all prayers were answered there.
Hong Ryeon's life
Parents' day is coming up at Gil-ran's martial arts academy, and they are practicing their routines; Gil-ran is supposed to sing a song whose refrain is "Cheer up, dad, you have us!" HR promises that she and Princess will be there.
This all stirs up a lot of feelings in Gil-ran, and she leafs through her mom's old yearbook looking at the pictures … wondering if her dad is in there somewhere. HR has apparently avoided the subject of who her dad is for ten years. She talks with Gong-mi about this. They agree that they can't tell her who her dad really is, but shouldn't they make up something to give her a positive picture? What about your first crush, Gong-mi suggests, that sweet upper-classman - Kang Tae-yun? HR was always too shy to talk with him, but he'll do.
So HR tells Gil-ran - with her memories of Kang Tae-yun, whom she hasn't seen in years and years, vividly before her mind's eye - that her father was tall and charming. ("My son is tall and charming," volunteers Ms. B.) "He was first in his class," HR continues, "and went to Seoul National University, and developed antivirus software while he was in college." But, she adds, "he died of leukemia …"
The next day, HR is putting together a large food order for the local police station, and she sees that Ms. B. has held out two wraps, to give to her son whom she sees as poor and hungry. On her way out, HR warns Ms. B. not to open the door for anyone, and if Kim Song-tae comes, she is to turn out the lights, be quiet, and pretend that no one is there.
Later in the day, Su-chan comes by the house to make a delivery. Of course Princess doesn't answer the door. As he and his assistant are standing there, up comes a young thug, apparently working for Kim Song-tae, and starts kicking roughly at the door and calling for the occupants to come out - "Let's see who is trying to live in someone else's house!"
Su-chan sends his assistant to warn HR not to go back to the house, and he finds her, but she is frightened for Princess who is there by herself. This means that she can't go to Parents' Day! She calls Gong-mi and begs her to go in her stead, and zips back to the Dragon House on her motorbike. The thug isn't there, but she doesn't see Princess in the house either and she leaves to look for her.
Meanwhile, Gong-mi is stuck at her mother-in-law's photography studio and can't reach her MIL to relieve her! Finally the woman, who had apparently been at her devotions, comes back, angry that instead of saying the sutra 3000 times she was only able to do it 2711 times on HR's account. At last Gong-mi is able to get going, but meanwhile the whole program at the Academy is under way. Gil-ran sings her song, but as she scans the audience and sees all the other kids' parents, nobody is there for her. To make matters worse, when it is over some other kids start picking on her, saying she has no business singing "Dad, you've got us" when she hasn't got a dad, and saying that she was "born in the street [gil]" and that's why she's called Gil-ran.
By the time Gong-mi finally arrives, Gil-ran has gotten in a fight with these kids and has then run off. They tell Gong-me she was going to Yeonamjeong. Indeed, there she is, at the pond where all prayers are answered, all wishes come true. Gil-ran's wish is for a father. She wants a real father like the other kids. She finishes her prayer. "Hey, kid," says a voice. Her tear-blurred vision reveals to her the figure of a tall, charming man. "Is this Yeonamjeong?" A man in a suit who has just arrived in a car, accompanied by his bespectacled secretary. It is Kang Tae-yun.
NOTE
I don't know how this show ends, but without having seen it, I will just volunteer this one observation. I recognize that K-dramas don't like to break up families and put a lot of stock in the idea of redemption and forgiveness. However, I suspect that in the long run it will prove very hard to go up against a magic oracle Korean wishing pond.
