ONE YEAR LATER!
Hong Ryeon's life
Ms. B, or "Princess", is still living with Hong Ryeon. She is a beloved family member. They have not yet gotten kicked out of the Dragon House. HR is surviving by running a snack business out of her house and making deliveries on a motorbike.
We open with Park Gong-mi praising HR for the great work she's done for Ms. B, who seems a lot better than when she arrived. There is a nice family photo of HR, Ms. B and Gil-ran in the window of the photo studio where Gong-mi is working for her MIL.
However HR has taught Ms. B a card game to exercise her mind, and Ms. B has developed into quite a card sharp! One of the local kids runs in and says that her mom is missing and her dad is going to go over to the Dragon House and make trouble if she doesn't turn up. Yes, all the local women are going over to play Ms. B. who wins all their money, and HR has to give it all back. "We must be pretty bad if we lose to a woman with dementia," one of them observes aptly.
HR is seen with Ms. B at a doctor's office. The doctor is very impressed with HR's meticulous records - "Real family couldn't do as much." Her condition does seem to be improving, but when pressed to remember her family, the person she remembers is YJH and she gets flustered and scared. This may - in part - account for the fact that HR has not successfully gotten any part of Ms. B's real name out of her in the whole last year, and refers to her exclusively as Princess.
We see HR at home with Gil-ran and Princess, working together in the snack business. Gong-mi twits them about how Princess refers to HR as "daughter" but calls Gil-Ran "sister". Princess rejoins with a jab at Gong-mi's vulgar red lips. This kind of banter is apparently a usual thing now.
Han Su-chan comes by with his assistant to bring some foodstuffs for the business; HR will only talk with the assistant. Su-ok has come along in the truck and is sitting there practicing her songs. She says she has to come along because otherwise HR, the "sly fox", will seduce her brother and take all his money. Su-chan wants her to be quiet, but she won't: "There are two people you can't shut up, independence fighter Ryu Gwansun and me!" She says that when Su-chan moves to Seoul as he is planning she won't have to ride herd on him any more.
In the evening, HR's family is conversing when someone starts pounding on the door! It's Kim Songtae, the owner of the Dragon House! HR turns out all the lights to pretend (rather ineffectually) that no one is home. He yells through the door that he is fed up with her stalling. Apparently she filed one court case that held things up, and now she has filed another one, but he says that it won't work, and that he doesn't care that everyone in town is on her side.
Yoon Jang-hwa's life
Kang Tae-yun is lying in bed, and sees his mother standing over him. She tells him she is close by and well …. he awakens and it's only a dream. But it reinforces his persistent feeling that she's still alive somehow.
YJH and Jeong-hae are attending a cooking class together; neither of them seems happy to be there. YJH is feeling pretty bored and hemmed in. She hasn't been going out on her own because it wouldn't look good to Tae-yun if she were having a great time, having lost track of his mother with apparently fatal consequences. Jeong-hae suggests that she use "sweet talk at night" to explain what she wants, but she says that "a wall has gone up between them" since Ms. B's disappearance.
The next morning YJH tells Tae-yun that she's still not pregnant, in spite of her efforts, and tells him that Dr. Kim, her gynecologist, says that maybe she's just been trying too hard and is overstressed and needs to take her mind off it. She says she'd like to take up her old interest in cosmetology. He is okay with this. In fact, however, she is taking birth control pills without KTY's knowledge, as we find out when their simple housekeeper, Geum-sun, wants to see what she would look like in the mirror with YJH's new purse and accidentally dumps it on the floor.
That night, KTY is out in a bar with his secretary, Mr. Choi, when in come two obvious gangster types on behalf of their boss, Choi Pil-du. He apparently claims to have some information about KTY's mother. Secretary Choi is worried that KTY shouldn't have dealings with a man like Choi Pil-du, much less go out and meet with him alone, but KTY goes off anyway. KTY meets with Pil-du in a dive surrounded by his men. Pil-du wants KTY to give him some kind of business deal. KTY shows him the paperwork which is almost complete, but he won't finalize things until he knows what Pil-du has.
Pil-du apparently does not have solid information yet, but he has hopes of getting it soon - and, for some reason of his own, to win KTY's confidence he shows KTY a PICTURE of his own investigator. "He can find out anything. He's like the Fifth Element," he boasts.
This was an unwise move, as it turns out. KTY recognizes the picture, as do we. We saw him a day ago; KTY saw him a year ago. He is the hoodlum who stole Ms. B's jewels and who later swore that he and his "father" were innocent bystanders on hand when Ms. B. committed suicide. KTY realizes that this gangster's story was a lie - and that he at last has a clue to her whereabouts.
