It’s become very clear that what this show needs is for that Mrs. Guk lady to come back and start bonking noggins together, or do whatever she can do to get some sense into those people. She’s the only one who isn’t a nut job!
I’ve never watched one of these daily contemporary dramas before and didn’t plan to watch this one. But I looked in on it early on because I wanted to see the guy from Great King Sejong (Chilnam the cabbie). Then I had a sleepless period and was watching the late-night airings. And I’ve been trying to keep up with it since then, although the broadcast times aren’t convenient. Is this show pretty typical for a daily drama? I mean, good grief, these people treat their adult kids like kindergartners, and the kids respond like kindergartners too. And the way that supposedly mature, professional adults whine about things like who might become their in-laws—good grief. These people should spend a little time with that Yeongju girl (the young single mom) and realize they could have REAL problems.
But even with the silliness, it certainly is interesting to see how another culture treats subjects like divorce, pregnancy, money, family relationships, etc. I’m not going to make a practice of watching these things but am looking forward to seeing how everything ends up in this one.
And it’s good that the focus is back on Hyeonsu and Suin, because that whole “Jisugate” business (What did she know? When did she know it?) got real tiresome and the series really lost its way when that was the main storyline. It's still there, unfortunately, and it seems like a pretty flimsy reason to be interfering with Hyeonsu and Suin wanting to marry. But in any event, you find yourself rooting for the two of them to hang in there against all of the pushback they're getting.

Dear ajk ~ your post is right on target. Yes... this story line is pretty much similar to other contemorary dramas. Parents asking the age-old question: How can you do this to me? and grown kids continuously offering: I'm sorry. Mrs. Guk indeed, needs to return. She's a good kindergarten teacher and her class is really out of control.

ajk, some of these daily dramas are really silly like the Road Home. I think that the characters are really shallow, and are not a good representation of Korean culture. But other dramas, like Mom's Dead Upset, is really interesting, intelligent, and appears to be more realistic. In these types of dramas, you get the sense that you really are getting a sense of what life is like in South Korea.

This drama is typical although not as crazy as some of the others. Also the the number of mean and nasty people is at a minimum. That would include Yongseon (Gangster Aunt) and Sumi (spoiled brat). Actually they aren't as vicious as some characters in other dramas, especially MIL's. At least we've gotten away from the poor girl/guy falling in love with rich guy/girl. We still have the disapproving parents though. Nobody is good enough for their precious son or daughter. I was just thinking what a small role Mrs. Guk has in this drama. I hope we see more of her.

All right-- I give up... I've always prided myself on my memory, but I've been poring over this since noon today. Who the heck is Mrs. Guk? ?? I'm probably going to feel pretty stupid when I get the answer. but that's okay. I just want to know so that I can get some sleep. Thanks.

Oh, wait a minute, is she Grandpa's neighbor at his old house? Yes, she'll have to show up, because she's probably Hiro's great aunt or something. She's always rewarding to watch.

. . . good grief, these people treat their adult kids like kindergartners, and the kids respond like kindergartners too. . . You can't win. Several years ago, I watched a TV documentary on aging. They interviewed a woman who related how, after she had been out late with her husband, her father asked, "What happened? You forget where the house was?". She appologized, but said she was thinking, "For crying out loud, Dad! I'm sixty-nine years old!" For a Ban Hyojeong (Mrs. Guk) fix, check out "Hometown over the Hill", Mondays at about 10:00 AM.

Well after watching Friday’s #97, all I could think was, Where did THAT come from? It was like suddenly there was this avalanche of sensibility and maturity that came crashing down out of nowhere and started clobbering people. Hyeonsu finally accepts reality and starts showing some backbone about his love; Suin’s brother and sister finally stick up for her for once; Hyeonsu’s mom looks genuinely ashamed and apologizes for her behavior; Hiro looks right at Jisu and says It’s time for an answer; and even the mouthy aunt’s husband and daughter call her on her stupidity for once. And now even Jisu shows up at her birth mom’s like she’s ready to stop pouting and talk things out like a grown-up. And the best one was Mrs. Jang giving Suin’s dad the talking-to he deserved, exactly in the way he needed to hear it (and doing it right away rather than letting everything fester). Give her the Mrs. Guk Award!
And on top of it all, Hyeonsu and Suin looked so happy to be together--like people in love should look. I don’t remember the last time we saw that. If it weren’t for Minsu still acting like a baby, you’d almost think you were watching the wrong series!
I just about gave up after that mom-barges-in-on-the-kiss scene, but #97 was a real breath of fresh air. I know that not everybody is going to act sensibly—otherwise there would be no plot, right?—but it’s a real relief to see at least some people being sensible sometimes.

In tonight's episode Grandfather said he was going to see Huyeonsu so I thought he was going to the church and I was really hoping that Mrs. Guk would drive him there and then she could meet her POSSIBLE nephew Hiro . . but the episode ended and Gramps wasn't there . . It sure would have been nice if he had showed up with his life-long lady friend; I miss seeing her and hearing her words of wisdom . .

I was hoping too but then I realized that grandpa would NEVER go against his daughter-in-law. Everybody in that household walks on eggshells around her.
