Oblivion (2013)
There was a war on Earth. The humans won but the planet becomes uninhabitable. The remaining humans go into space to find somewhere else to live. Jack (Tom Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) stay behind to safeguard natural resources and fight off remaining aliens. Not everything is what it seems. That's the most important thing to remember.
Upside Down (2013)
I first heard about this movie on a Korean show even though it's not a Korean film. It's from 2012 but didn't premiere in the US until this year. You have a guy and girl from opposite worlds. They fight against all odds to be together. Beyond that, the film is harder to explain. You have people Up Top and Down Below. They're upside down from each other. The movie is nice visually but the story is weak.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
In the first movie, the enemy was from the future. In this movie, the enemy is from the past.
The Little Mermaid
Disney let Ariel out of the vault...on blu-ray.

The Heat (2013)
Comedy about an FBI agent and a crazy Boston cop hunting down drug dealers.

Planes (2013)
It's like Cars but with planes. Theme of overcoming your fears to pursue your dreams.
We're The Millers (2013)
Drug dealer goes with his pretend family to Mexico to smuggle drugs back into the the US. Some parts are really funny. Other parts aren't.
Elysium (2013)
Set in 2154. The rich live on a fancy space station. The poor live on Earth.
Prisoners (2013)
It's about 2 families whose daughters go missing and the detective in charge of the case. I was able to figure out what happened to the daughters early on so the movie felt kinda long. It's 2h 30m.
The Wolverine (2013)
Logan goes to Japan. He must save Mariko-chan. I would dishonor my family if I reveal more.
Red 2 (2013)
The sequel to Red. It's about retired CIA agents. Catherine Zeta Jones, Anthony Hopkins and Lee Byung Hun are in it.

Musashi
This is an NHK version from 2003 with a very good cast. It is presented in 49 installments and at the end of each chapter there is a short historical comment. The film is based on the novel by Yoshikawa Eiji and features Kabuki actor, Ichikawa Shinnoske in the title role. He presents a more believable Musashi than either Mifune or Nakamura Kinnoske mainly because he is the right age. Plenty of good action and Musashi's philosophy about life, swordsmanship and art is well defined. They have 49 hours to do it in. It also does not end with his famous duel with Sasaki Kojiro but goes beyond that point. Well worth seeing IMO. Of the four versions I have seen this one is the one I liked the most. A few facts about Musashi's tactics and strategy are missing bit certainly not to the detriment of the overall drama. You can see it at gooddrama.net

Pacific Rim (2013)Humans use giant robots to fight aliens. Pretty bad all around. Some would argue that they're not robots but mecha. Distinction? Robots are able to function by themselves once they're programmed. A mecha requires a human operator. My fav mecha anime; Macross, Patlabor because they're down to earth and doesn't involve some super mumbo jumbo divine power to operate. PR's a pretty good popcorn movie. Better than Transformers I've to say.

Cloud Atlas (2012)
I had forgotten about this movie until feihu reminded me about it in the music thread. I liked it but I'm not sure I understood it. History repeats itself? Past, present and future are connected? I wasn't expecting to see a naked Bae Doona. Not that I'm complaining lol.
Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)
These movies are mostly just Jennifer Lawrence out in the woods but I'll watch anything with her (and Elizabeth Banks) in it. Not sure if it's the same way in the books. I guess what makes a difference is whether you buy into the characters or not.
The Counselor (2013)
Drug deal gone bad. There's double crossing involved. On multiple occasions a character gives a long speech that leaves you going "WTF was that about?".
Cold Comes The Night (2013)
A criminal with bad eyesight takes a mother and daughter hostage to help him retrieve a stolen package. I'll watch anything with Alice Eve (this sounds familiar). Alice did a good American accent.
Thor: Dark World (2013)
Didn't watch the first movie but decided to give it a shot anyway. I figured something was up with Loki because the ladies love Tom Hiddleston. There would have been riots all over the world if something happened to him.

We watched The Millers this weekend, and I was pleasantly surprised. I never like Jennifer Aniston movies. Knov1, I was wondering what you objected to.

Frozen (2013)Elsa loses control of her powers and turns Arendelle into a winter wonderland. Anna goes off searching for her sister hoping to get things back to normal. Do you want to build a snowman? Knov1, I was wondering what you objected to. I don't remember anymore. It's been a while and I watch a lot of movies. I believe my opinion of it was mostly positive.

LOL. We were rolling, but I do think there were a few places where we said, um, eugh. However, we do have a large tolerance for tastelessness, as long as it's sufficiently funny and not just "Jackass" level. I wonder if you've seen "Rare Exports" (Santa Claus monster movie from Finland) or "Iron Sky" (Nazi fantasy movie, Finnish/Australian/German) or "Norwegian Ninja" (Finnish) ... wait. I'm seeing a pattern here. Anywho, they all contain things they might not be able to put into an American movie.
But, because you are a big movie guy, I would recommend any of those three movies. We enjoyed them, and we're even looking out for a used or cheap copy of Norwegian Ninja. We either streamed them or got them from Netflix, I don't think Iron Sky showed for more than five minutes in the U.S.

I haven't seen any of the films you mentioned. I don't watch many foreign films. I watch movies mostly for entertainment purposes. If it interests me, I watch it. If it didn't put me to sleep, I recommend it. I don't really bother with reviews by critics or movies with Oscar buzz. I'll often watch movies that are Oscar nominated and such but that's not necessarily what I'm looking for.

That's why I think you'd like these movies. They're entertaining, totally out there and funny as heck.
No foreign films? Kpop Fanboy doesn't watch foreign films? LOL...
