Eposode 2 tonight! Can't wait; cleared the hour; won't go anywhere; making pop corn. My husband says I should get a life.
(I know; I know. I can read the spoilers or tape it. But somehow, that's not the same.)

I taped episode 1 and watched it tonite with my son and husband -- we were at the Philly luncheon last week. I am giving historical dramas a second go. So this episode wasn't bad, but I have to know, did women really fight ?

Door, I dont know about Korea but I know that in Europe there definitely were women warriors --Joan of Arc in France and Boudica in England come to mind.

In last night's episode (#2), was everything that happened after the Iron Empress dove into the water and hit something and lost consciousness a 14 (I think) year flashback? Thanks!

In last night's episode (#2), was everything that happened after the Iron Empress dove into the water and hit something and lost consciousness a 14 (I think) year flashback? Thanks! Yes, maranyc, it'a a flashback of 14 years. EPISODE 1 The opening scene with the CG bears and men in bear suits was hilarious. At one point one of the "bears" literally punched a guy in the face. ;D I also marveled at how well trained they were; so obedient and able to distinguish the enemy from their masters. Looks like we're off to a fantastical start. There are so many familiar faces besides Lady Jami. King Sonjo/Gulsabiwu, Wyon Kyun, Dodo, Wakizaka, Du Kyung Seung/Dae Jung Sang, The Archfiend/Xue Rengui, Lt. Song, Yi Jung (YSS's father), Tea Masters Genzo and Jotai, Master Dudeul, San Ga, and Baron Huh to mention a few.

Your mastery of the names is amazing, tink!
Episode 2 was easier to understand. Biwu is so good as the king. (He should win one of those KBS awards.) It looks like from the trailers that he's getting married in Ep. 3. He clearly likes the granddaughter (future IE) but I was a little thrown when she's in jail and three seconds later, she's free and hanging around with the rebel general. Of course the king let her out but there should have been a scene showing that. All I read from the subs is that he asked to see her. It might be that WMBC cuts short scenes for their damn commercial!
And what's with Grandma Dowager? She's throwing the poor kid to the lions! I'm not sure I trust her. She's very sneaky, very political, very sharp.

...... It might be that WMBC cuts short scenes for their damn commercial!..... Yes, I think they cut it there as well - how annoying! Plus it seemed to start later than usual.....

The Dowager is trying to save the last of her lineage, the son, thou disgusting to think I can see her logic. The fiesty daughter will wip the Emporer into shape quite easily watch and see. (Gulsabiwu of DJY) is doing a smash up job, I have never laugh so hard regarding a KDrama, his acting is spot on. The brother will eventually become the weak and docile King who gives away most of his empire, this was said in episode one

I have to admit I wasn’t impressed with the first episode: a little too campy and too much yelling, whining and pouting. Do we really need to hear every pant and “hai” while someone’s on horseback?? On the other hand, I enjoyed Episode 2 much better. King Gyeongjong is knuts! (Is this really the actor who played Gulsabiwu?? Looks like they gave him thicker eyebrows….) The archery contest gets way, way out of hand and takes some wild turns. I was wondering about the crossbow with trigger used by Mr. Nasty, Yeiu Wuji. According to wikipedia, China had a trigger pulled crossbow as far back as 2nd century BC.

Nastyman is just about the worst villain I've come across in a historical - a thrill killer. But then, I've only seen one other historical, Dae Joyong, and the baddies in that all had some redeeming qualities or at least reasons for their dastardly deeds.

Isn't Biwu related to the Su? I somehow got it that they're cousins or something, cause I thought I read Biwu called the dowager Auntie at one point.

brooklyn, i believe the dowager is King G's grandmother. that makes su his cousin if i am not mistaken. anyone else who can verify or correct this? the actor who played biwu and now King G won my heart in DJY. he is superb in this role as the king...so different from his previous role. i hope he will have some redeeming qualities. nonetheless, i am happy to see him and other familiar faces. speaking of, i can't recall who posted some of those, but thanks. the one person i couldn't place, and should have known right away, was the actor who played master Duduel. and, of course, any scene with my beloved archfiend is one to treasure. ;D the dowager seems quite cunning and formidable. i love the battle scenes. the king is entertaining. i was most unhappy with the inopportune cut that wmbc made for their commercial. i do not mind the commercial, well maybe a little , but they could pick better spots....they did that in ep 1 as well.

Yes, they are cousins. I am enjoying the scenes with the King too. I thought he was crazy as King Sonjo in IYSS but he has taken it to a whole new level here. Master Dudeul is one of the ministers of the court. In episode 2, WYBE cut out part of The Palguanhwe Festival. I think most of the stations must be cutting scenes to fit it in the time slot. I understand as long as it's not something vital to the story.

I think the actor playing King Gyeongjong is Choi Chul Ho (or Choi Cheol-ho). (found this somewhere on the DJY board a long time ago) Yeah, he's on a whole new level. Everytime he's on, I'm on the edge of my seat! Is he going to react normally and make a good decision, or will he give an impetuous 'off with their heads'? Great acting.

The actor who plays King Sungjong (episode 1) and Wakizaka in IYSS, also played General Gom Mojam in DJY. He made the bad decision to support Go Anseung for the next king, but ended up being killed by Anseung.
