Okay, this is the usual spoiler thread. A “spoiler,” for anyone who isn’t aware, is a piece of information about a series episode that hasn’t been broadcast yet. Any information or discussion about Iron Empress episodes that have not yet aired in Chicago must—MUST—be posted here and nowhere else.
Unfortunately it appears that every US outlet that’s airing the series is on a different schedule, so if you’re one of our non-Chicago friends and your station is running ahead of Chicago’s WOCH, please be very careful about posting possible spoilers outside of this thread. Check the Chicago episode schedule thread if you have any confusion.
If you post a spoiler outside of this thread, it will be deleted as soon as it’s found. Which will only waste the time you took to post it. So if you must post a spoiler, this is the place for it. And as a bonus, you’ll be showing compassion to those of us who foam at the mouth and keel over backwards when we stumble upon a renegade spoiler.
If you’re new here and have any questions about spoilers, you’re more than welcome to send a message to me or any of the forum’s other moderators using the message function, which is accessed at the top of the main forum page.

Okay, looks like this drama is following the DJY route. In episode 27, the Iron Empress goes to the Khitan empire and meets the Khitan empress.

Oh dear !!!that was my big fear but i hope KBS may learn lightening does not strike twice . I do not want to see this stretched out for 134 episodes but luckily it would seem with a new born Chae will not commit either . I was hoping this would be more akin to EWG or AOW neither of which i have seen ,as it stands i do not know why KBS just did not do another Balhae drama if that is their aim to follow DJY rather than giving us a historical makeover .

Remember how in DJY, the Tang empress wanted to keep DJY as her subject because he was interesting? Well, the Khitan empress wants to keep the Iron Empress as her subject, too! lol Our fellow empress rejects and gets sent to the mines as a slave. DJY the female version lol

Well, maybe there is a glimmer of hope for this series. We just got #35 here in LA, and it was pretty good. The writers have finally figured out a way out of the box they wrote themselves into for the last 4 episodes, and we got a good scene and very good dialog. Typically, it was delivered by the supporting actors/actresses again. The leads look either totally clueless (Kim Chiyang, almost laughable at this point) or bored (Hunae). Ironically, they found a very strong and compelling female in the Liao Empress Dowager! The series should have been about her and GKS fans will be happy to see a familiar and welcome face in the Liao court, and naturally, he is yet another strong supporting character.

I'm on episode #35 too. It's not the writers fault that the last 4 episode dragged out as bad as they did. Back during the filming of episode #30 the actor playing Kim Chiyang was in a bad car wreck, and injured his neck and back. KBS had two choices...Suspend the show, or have the writers completely re-write the script so that Kim Chiyang could be filmed flat on his back as much as possible... That's why "Chiyang" was wearing a mask when he had to sword fight Hunae in front of the Khitan Dowager... They had to drag out that whole prisoner of war part for 3 more episodes than were necessary... On the plus side, it was fun to see "Psycho Chiyang" starting to show...

I'm on episode #46. Hunae has finally gained her power as her son took the throne and changed the title of ruler from king to emperor again.
Bu Kiwon from DJY has joined IE as Choi Hang, one of IE's closest subject. He's actually a good guy here lol
Go Sagae from DJY also joined IE as Hwangbo Yui, who is IE's cousin

Yes!!!! This drama was missing Bu Kiwon's face. Will he be evil or good? All the while I'm watching, I so wished that he was playing the part of Chi's wife's father, or the father's friend.

truth, in episode 40 or 41 didn't Song give up his right to the throne to save his mother?
With Song out of the way, I thought that Prince Daeryang would be automatically next in line... So my question is, what was the Queen trying to get the King to write on that scroll when Gang Jo broke in and busted her in the mouth?

So my question is, what was the Queen trying to get the King to write on that scroll when Gang Jo broke in and busted her in the mouth? The Queen was trying to get the King to write that Prince Daewryang would be the successor to the throne. But Gang Jo broke in and ruined everything, so Song automatically took the throne. Prince Daeryang will take the throne after Gang Jo's coup to take down King Mokjong(Song) and IE.

IE has just bore Kim Chi Yang's baby. Gang Gam Chan and Choi Hang (Bu Kiwon from DJY) are planning a coup to take IE down.

Here in L.A. we just slogged thru episodes 50 &51. All I can say is, I hope you like gratutious martial arts scenes.
But I will hang in there, out of curiosity how the writers manage to figure this out to its ultimate conclusion.
I have determined that I can't blame this mess completely on the listless performance of the leads. The writers seem to have no clue and once again we got a WTF moment where a 'martial arts demonstration' was called for, thus chewing up about 5 minutes of script.
Oh, and episode 51 is a hum-dinger. Yikes!

Information contributed by jojo, relocated from another thread:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve been reading A New History of Korea, by Ki-baik Lee (thanks for the recommendation!) and found this on p. 126:
“Kang Cho, the powerful military commander of the northwest frontier region, had disposed King Mokchong (Hunae’s son, who becomes king after Songjong), eliminated the rival Kim Ch’i-yang faction, and enthroned Hyonjong (Seol’s son).”
I’m assuming that Kang Cho is Gang Jo, and that’s it the same Kim Chiyang as seen in Iron Empress. (please let me know if I’m wrong) I was wondering why Gang Jo would support Seol’s son over Hunae’s and your info from Hubert’s books offers an explanation
Kang Cho later went on to suppress a second Khitan invasion but ended up defeated, captured and killed. But the Khitans did not proceed further with their invasion.
