I Got the book and here is the bummer (oh man !!!!sob sob !! )
Its 10 Volumes and only Vol 10 is translated into English
With the synopsis it seems that book and tv drama are on the same page ;D.
What the series omits is Sejong's sex life .
(So he was not just hanging out at the Hall Of Worthies all night )
The Great King had 8 Concubines hand picked by the queen ,of course in the tv drama they are all servants .
The fave was Yi Sun who was the youngest ,the most beautiful and most versed in the arts .
Shock #1 Joseon Women were not taught to read and write from the Queen on down the line .
Shock#2 (by 21st Century western standards )amongst the concubines Kim Hyobin
yes daddys girl and mom of his half brother ,seems Sejong thought if she was good enough for ol dad than he may as well try her too .
The crux of the last volume is the creation of Hangul which was done in the concubines quarters using the vocal sounds of court musicians away Choi Manli and the rest of the Hall Of Worthies conservatives ,this was set up by the Queen who was a major player in this ,thus the concubines and queen were amongst the first to read and write in Hangul .
Sadly the Queen dies before the project is finished .
Sejong is madly in love with Puri a 17 year old Kiaseng and musical virtuoso who becomes Sejongs partner in the creation of Hangul ,Puri's mom was also a famed Kiaseng who had been Sejongs lover but was dismissed from court for insulting Sejongs generals .
Sejong loves Puri but mindful of how her mother ended up she gives Sejong her artistic talents but northing else much to the ol geezers chagrin ,still he is so much in love with Puri and scared of losing her he has to content himself with giving one of the ol girls a turn while thinking of Puri .
After the Hangul project is completed Puri leaves with her lover .
Not much time to weep the old (He was only 54 )King has to do battle and match wits one more time with Choi Manli ,Ming and all other opposition before making Hangul law .
Thats the book on which the TV Drama was adapted from ,i wish the earlier 9 volumes had been translated .
I Don't think i unleashed any spoilers because its the last part where the TV Drama and Book go in opposite directions ,the TV Drama wants Sejong to be monogamous (unheard of back than at least for women ,being Gay was not an issue either ..... did Sejong and Yangsil have something going ....we will never know unless the other 9 Volumes are translated, as this was done in 1981 thats highly unlikely ...but it seems they were quite close ) reducing all Sejong's Concubines to palace maids .
The Crown Princess took poison too as the Bong Family were banished and exiled id assume this was not voluntary .
