dyc, can you recommend one English-language book on Korean history that you think is particularly good? I've been looking for one book that provides a good general overview of the whole of Korean history for non-Korean readers. Without knowing one book from another, I'm reluctant to shell out the money for any of them. But if you have a recommendation, that would help me a lot.
Anybody else with recommendations, I'm all ears.

I have to go with Hulbert's massive 2 volume History really . Its horribly out of print so join a Library and get it through an interlibrary loan . What i like about Hulbert is he had access to all kinds of records and covers so much stuff you will not find in modern texts . Also i would tip the hat to Behind The Scenes Of Royal Palaces in Korea by Tae Hung Ha . Both of these tomes are very chatty and informative . for a more modern text Ki Baek Li A New History Of Korea .

Thanks, dyc! Much appreciated. For now I'll go with the "New History"; something basic to start off with and not overwhelm a simple mind. I just ordered a copy.
For everybody's information, there are plenty of used copies of "New History" listed on bookfinder.com for under $10, shipping included. So it's affordable enough that you can buy your own and not be on a library's timetable.

dyc, the book arrived yesterday and it looks fantastic. Exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. I have a lot of reading and writing that I need to catch up on, but I'll start in on the book ASAP and will let you know how it goes.
By the way, the professor who wrote the paper in the "paper" thread mentioned that book too. He said that when he was teaching (he's emeritus now), he used a 1991 book called "Korea Old and New, a History" which is a combination of Ki Baek Li's material on earlier history and several other contributors' material on modern history. So you obviously picked the right book to recommend for this forum. Thanks again.
