I was just wondering what other viewers think about the performance of the actor who's playing Jang Youngsil. Is it just me, or is he by far the weakest actor in the series?

Geeze, I never thought about it. I mean, coming from a female point of view, he's kinda cute in an Asian Orlando Bloom sort of way.

Yes, now that you mention it, the Jang Youngsil character really is as dull as a doorknob.
In a rather low-key drama such as this, you need the personalities of the characters to shine through to keep things interesting. Most of the actors are doing fine, but I’m just not sensing much in the way of personality from Jang Youngsil.
I don’t know if the actor is naturally lifeless, or if he’s struggling with director’s orders to (intentionally) deliver a boring character, but there sure isn’t anything exciting about the character he’s playing.

His character is usually out of his depth. First he has a romance with the daughter of his employer (owner?), and that ends badly. Then his situation wasn't so bad, but he's just supposed to be earnest and diligent. Next he's roundly reviled for getting above his class, so he's kind of stuck and plods on working then sitting in the courtyard. Maybe he'll triumph in the end and have some happiness. I do agree that he'd be more compelling if his eyes twinkled or something.

No question, it is kind of an awkward character to play, especially since he hasn't been able to boss anybody around yet. Maybe he'll show some spark of life in his new situation. But so far he makes me think of a benign version of the Frankenstein monster. Except a little bit less expressive. Not meant as a putdown; that's really what he reminds me of. Must be something about the blank face or the blank stare or the lack of connection with others around him.

Thank you. I'm so glad to see that someone besides myself was bored to pieces by the portrayer of Jang Youngsil. I'm sorry, I just think the guy was chosen for his looks, rather than his acting ability. That blank "deer caught in the headlights" stare seems like the only expression he can manage. Even when he got punished, or cried (!), he STILL kept his face immobile and inexpressive. Not Orlando Bloom, but a young Brent Spiner as Data would have been a better analogy. Except even Data was more expressive!
