I was just reading on Twitch Film that Sejong will probably be extended by some 12-20 episodes the reason being that Chae Si Ra star of the up coming Cheonchu fell of a horse and suffered a fracture thus causing the production to be postponed by as long as 12 weeks . This leaves KBS with the problem of what to put in that weekend time slot . The obvious solution is to extend Sejong but KBS are none to happy with its ratings still it looks like thats the only option . The other new spooky historical drama Hometown Legends (New English Title )with Choi Su Jong just had its first episode Fox With 9 Tails and has already become a big hit .
So maybe more Sejong ?,considering they (in my own humble opinion )spent way to long on his rise to power this may really work out for the best .

Uh-oh...Thanks for the update, dyc. And please do post anything more you hear; much appreciated. I gotta say, though, this is NOT good news, considering the way they utterly mangled the whole Dae Jo Young story when they decided to extend that series. You're right, they sure did spend a long time on Sejong's rise to the throne, and I'm sure there are a lot of good stories to tell. And certainly the creative people writing GKS are a heck of a lot better than the ones who wrote DJY, so maybe they'll make it work. But sure I hope they find another solution besides trying to stretch out GKS with filler material. It's just a very difficult thing to do in midstream and maintain the quality of the story.

I am in two minds on this i love Sejong and am looking forward to Cheonchu but .......this may work out because the writers were worried they may have had to rush the end of Sejong now KBS may give them room . I was very surprised that KBS were unhappy with its ratings .So who knows what they will do though they should not worry the advance word on Kingdom Of The Winds is this will be a mega hit so that should sooth their troubled minds .

Hmm...Well, if the writers think they can use the extra episodes, then maybe it will work out for the best after all. It does seem like a few things in recent episodes have been rushed through, just a little bit. But we don't get a vote on it, so I guess we can only sit back and hope for the best.

It has been decided that they will extend GKS up to 5 more episodes. Orignally planned to end at episode 80, GKS will now end at episode 85. Ratings for GKS has really been low compared to DJY. DJY maintained 30% ratings while GKS is as low as 10% right now. Perhaps because the show is missing big action scenes like DJY. Also, Choi Su Jong does not come out in the first episode about the Nine tailed fox-girl. He comes out in the third episode called the 'Sword of Sajin'

I thought GKS was supposed to run 150 episodes or so? Thought I read that somewhere. Only 80 or 85 then? And they're still in the process of finishing up filming on the series? Interesting.

I think you are talking about DJY here. DJY consisted of 134 episodes. GKS was never planned to run 150 episodes. It was supposed to run 100 episodes at first, but they reduced it down to 80 episodes due to low ratings. Good news for GKS fans is that they will be running 5 more episodes due to Chae Shira's injury. (She's the main character for the follow-up history drama Empress Chunchu)

Well THAT explains a whole lot--thanks, truth. I've been getting frustrated lately because stuff seems to be getting rushed through (and the summaries are getting tougher to do as a result). I thought it was just me, but obviously they're moving faster now that they have fewer episodes to cover everything. This business about stretching and squeezing series by huge chunks because of ratings points is very irritating--it's not good for the quality of the series. I would have thought that Korean TV executives would be a little more sensitive to that than the clowns who run American TV, especially when it comes to the nation's history. Well, I guess I shouldn't rant about it--85 is still better than zero.

This drama got screwed over...Twice...

Yeah, I agree completely. They had to know that this series wouldn't draw the same audience as the ones with big military conflicts. They probably did spend too much time on the bickering-princes stuff; if they were going to spend too much time on something, it could just as well have been the Tsushima invasion. Still, though, the quality has been so good that the show deserves better than what KBS is doing to it. A real shame.

When Sejong was announced i was surprised that KBS would pick this Monarch because despite the fact that he is one of the greatest Kings nothing really happened during his reign ,yes he did create the Korean Alphabet but the whole Tsushima episode was really nothing much more than a bit of handbags and blew over pretty quickly ,as such his reign was peace and stability ,great for the people but not for K Historical Drama fans . KBS though have done a great job with this considering they created all this material with really nothing to work with . It is easily one of the best Historical Drama's i have watched (Dae Jo Who ??)It has a great mix of Malice In The Palace ,Court Intrigue and few rebellions and skirmishes as well as the odd melee all set to stirring music . So its sad to read of KBS bungling .

That's funny - "nothing to work with." Lots of pretty people and pretty costumes and some cute little kids, though.

Well, now I know a new word. I'd never heard that use of the word "handbags," dmc, so I looked it up: 'Handbags' is used to describe attempts of players to fight but without the fighting or a pathetic attempt at demonstrating bravado. The phrase can also be phrased as handbags at ten paces to emphasise the lack of real intent or conflict. A commentator may refer to a slight scuffle between two players as "a bit of handbags..." (Source: www.kwintessential.co.uk/crossculturalnews/archives/cat_395416785.html)Big phrase in English soccer, apparently. So you taught me a new one. Anyway, I had the same reaction you did when they announced GKS and I started reading up on Sejong. Great historical figure but it just didn't seem like the kind of story that would generate huge ratings--not a lot of good guys/bad guys stuff that people like. I agree, they've done a great job in spite of that, and the series is excellent. Now if they'd do one of these long series about Gwanggaeto, THEN they'd get some big ratings. He seemed to be a much more logical choice for one of these big series than Sejong. Hopefully they'll get to him soon, because wow what a story.

AJK thats exactly where i pinched the phrase from ,the good old English Premiere League probably the worlds longest running soap opera ,The most vivid depiction i remember was about 6 years ago when a half time scuffle erupted between Arsenal and Manchester United Players ,than United Captain Roy Keane (Now Manger Of Sunderland )picked a pizza from a steward in the players tunnel and rammed it in the face of Arsenals Manager Arsene Wegner this set both sides flexing up and calling each other various body parts coupled with promises of a variety of gruesome deaths and beatings yet it all came to nothing more than that .
I Agree on the Gwanggaeto subject or his son Jangsu who actually conquered more ground than his famous father and lived into his 90's ,Jangsu is pretty much regarded as the pinnacle of Gogureyeon power . As it is i think we will see a decline in Joseon Drama's and more Koryo and Three Kingdom's dramas if for no other reason than ratings . I also think Sejong may have suffered because of Yi San even though they are 300 years removed in time just having two big Joseon Dramas on two networks may have been overkill as Yi San came first Sejong probably suffered from a Joseon backlash(And King And I thats three dramas on three networks also i guess 6 Ministers and Conspiracy added in to the mix so thats 5 in 12 months ) .
Having only seen Sejong ,Conspiracy and large parts of Yi San i think Sejong is easily the best of the batch had it been made and aired a few months earlier it may have fared better rather than suffering from Joseon overkill .

I was idly scrolling through page 2 here, when the topic of "Sejong Extension...well maybe?" caught my eye. I'd remembered reading that there were supposed to be 100 episodes as well. Now I'm sorry to see there are only going to be 85, although of course, it beats the 80 they'd knocked it down to earlier. With all the tremendous production values and excellent actors being used in this series, it seems beyond belief KBS would be worrying about ratings! When the British make one of their masterful historical dramas, they do it with an eye to quality.
One would think this is one of the most painless ways to learn history! Isn't that a noble goal in and of itself?! Especially when it's the story of probably the greatest king in Korean history?!
I suppose the real idiots in their production department will find some way to liven up the story of his developing the Korean alphabet. Imaginary, from a future meeting: "I know! We'll have some pirates, dressed as ninjas, attack King Sejong while he works in the library! THAT'll make bored people more interested in how he made up the alphabet!"
Oh--and I almost forgot to add: "That's right! And we'll throw in a really inappropriate modern song as background music, to let everyone know how hip we really are!"
