Sorry, Lucy! We're way behind here in New York so I'm sure I won't edge into spoiler country again.
I did read somewhere (not KBS, I don't think) that M'sDU was "sexy". Haven't see it so far, at least not by American standards. The action seems very tame and tradition-bound, like in most K-dramas. Strangely enough, I find that relaxing.

Well, the oldest daughter and her lawyer boyfriend with the baggage do make out a lot, the last daughter's boyfriend was shirtless and the son called his wife sexy a bunch, so I guess that's why they say it's sexy? lol I'll admit it's still tame compared to dramas here but some of the dialogue and actions did make my jaw drop, for a quick second though.

I think Yeongmi's wardrobe lately is more offensive… those dresses she wears around the house to please the Queen make her look 20 years older. Pretty soon Becky will be screaming "Aunt Bea, Aunt Bea, Aunt Bea…"

I still remember in the first episode or so Yeongsu making out with her lover, lying down on the couch. That was pretty shocking, considering how little even engaged couples do in these dramas. And the son and his wife talked openly about how she wasn't going to breastfeed because he (and I guess she) didn't want her breasts to change shape and get less "sexy."

I'm posting the following here and in Sayuri's thread:
Geom (I can't remember the character's name) is already appearing and has been appearing for a while in the episodes being shown here in Chicago.

I was startled by that scene too, Lucy. The kisses in these dramas are usually so chaste.
I read somewhere that the theme of MDU is the intrusion of modern Korean life into old style tradition. I guess that why Mom's so upset.

Oh no, I guess very soon the dramas will be like the American ones then. That'd suck.

I know the title says "Mom is Dead Mad", but I think she suffers from depression. She is always upset. Smiles once in a while, but mostly upset. I know children give their parents grief but I did not like the comment she made to Miyeon " kids are crosses to bear". "Inseong is one , why have another?" Her kids are sometimes brats but they are all grown up and they do not have any serious problems or addictions. She should be happy that they are healthy. I think she justs feels unappreciated. She needs a hobby outside the home. Something to keep her mind off things and that makes her happy. Something that she can find herself, since she has spent all of her life being a daughter, dil and wife.

So in the NY/NJ area, we're on episode 14, or thereabouts. Wow, I love this show! It's so refreshing to see scenarios that are more realistic in these dramas. I think the characters are so interesting too. The rich mother with that mockingbird is a scream! I also love Eunsil and her mother. Really, all the characters are note worthy and complicated! I am totally sucked in. I know You Are My Destiny is a much lighter show, but it really can't compare to this one. I love the darkness of this show too!

I agree, Door. YAMD is lightweight compared to this. Even the production values are richer - more locations, better acting, realistic within K-drama confines, and more varied. Like you, I get two nites a week, Sat and Sun. YAMD I get 5 nites a week. I wish it was reversed.
And Pippi, the main mom, the one who's always whining about something, gives me a pain, too.

She needs a hobby outside the home. Something to keep her mind off things and that makes her happy. Something that she can find herself, since she has spent all of her life being a daughter, dil and wife. I see this through a different lens, Pippibella. I agree that Hanja (?) is depressed, but situationally rather than clinically; and I think the actress is portraying that quite well. Who wouldn’t be, given the people she’s saddled with as family members, how they treat her, and what they expect of her? IMO she should tell everybody but her father-in-law to get stuffed, but then that’s how I feel about most of these dramas. Whether because of her own personality or her culture, she either behaves passive-aggressively or else lashes out and then turns inward, neither of which does a thing to improve her situation, of course. Finally she sees something worthwhile and exciting ahead for her if she undertakes seeking a college education, and she gets shot down very crudely and thoughtlessly when she suggests it to the one child she expected to be supportive. As far as her comment to Miyeon, don't forget that Miyeon doesn't intend to raise the second child herself, but rather fully expects her m-i-l to -- to me, Hanja was thinking that that second child would become her own burden. Also, when I consider that one's in-laws become family in this culture far more than in Western culture, and when I recall some of the reasons Hanja was against at least two of her kids' marriages, and then see her dire predictions coming to pass, yes, I could see her having times of feeling very burdened by her children. None of them are exactly contributing any joy or happiness to her life, that I can see. I find her sighing and wiltedness annoying sometimes, but overall I feel badly for her and can understand if she feels sentenced to living her entire life as an indentured servant to some people who are ungrateful and others who are several levels below her on the evolutionary scale. What does she have to be cheerful and upbeat about? Her husband, s-i-l, d-i-l and son all come across as if they’re genetically simple-minded, albeit somewhat functional. One of her daughters who has other options is choosing to live as if she were Cinderella with a wicked, abusive stepmother, and a husband and f-i-l who enable the miserable b---h in her mistreatment; the other is high-functioning in business but totally inept and cast adrift when human concerns and personal matters are concerned. While all of her kids are grown, they also are all over their heads, and two of them turn to her as their ace-in-the-hole to take over their own parenting responsibilities and get haughty when she doesn’t jump for joy, but nobody seems to give two hoots about her. She does come across as not being a warm person, but why should she feel particularly warmly to this collection of ingrates, with one or two exceptions? The only one who’s a somewhat kindred soul, her f-i-l, isn’t likely to be around much longer, whether because of his advanced age or because he may possibly remarry. She really does light up when she’s in contact with one of her lady friends or engages in something silly with her husband, and she showed clear insight and empathy into how young Sora must be feeling, so there is another side to her. I hope they end this with her coming out with a whole lot more than some meaningless, guilt-induced platitudes from her family, or with her completely surrendering her life in the service of this bunch. With any luck, she’ll become friends with her f-i-l’s ladyfriend and receive some solid advice and support from her.

I totally sympathize with the main character. She plays exasperated very well, and I understand her frustrations. She does not at all bother me. I find her reactions realistic. I would love to see her in another role, just to check out her range as an actress, which I am sure is great.

Wow, Lila! I haven't come to the part where Mom wants to go to college, or Yeongmi's marriage or Miyeon's second baby, but your post has me rethinking her character, especially the "passive-aggressive/lashing out and turning inward" part.
Good job!

Awesome comment, Lila. I agree with you totally. "Mom" is annoying in her manner, but I empathize with her regarding her sense that she's disappointed with life--she has good reason to be.
