I notice that when they show the subtitles it seems like the characters are saying more than what is shown in English..for instance if someone is saying.." I can't stand you" in Korean ....the Character is going on for about 15 seconds of what is shown in English..is the translator translating everything that these characters are saying..?

I've noticed that whenever one character insults another on the show, it's almost always translated as "jerk" (and on some other dramas, it was "rascal"). I wonder if they're using much stronger words in Korean

I don't like the slang translations, especially in the historical dramas. A Sixth Cent AD Tang monarch would never say, "The ball's in your court, lame-brain." Also, the translators tend to use the same phrases over and over like, "I'm burdened by ..." and there are very many typos.
It must be a difficult job to get across what is being said in as few words as possible. I appreciate getting the jist of the dialog but a bit more of the flavor would be nice.

So when they say "Oh Boy" they are really saying "Ah Sh*t?"

In the first ep of the show "Who's My Love", which the great Michael Han did the subs for, he did what seemed to be a complete, word-for-word translation of a rapid-fire argument between two characters. The subtitles were flying by so fast I could hardly keep up! As long as the point of what's being said is conveyed, I think that's OK.

;D Every watch a John Wayne movie dubbed in Japanese? Hilarious! And - did anyone ever see "What's Up Tiger Lily" - too funny - ;D I'd rather have the English subs than dubbed dialogue any day - you can get a lot from the actors facial expressions and tone of voice - guess that's why = even tho I don't understand Korean - and DO read the subs - I still need the audio turned up so I can hear it - LOL - My kids all tease me about it - but ... hey .. what can I say???

So, soapy, do you think that when Grandma fans herself and says, "Aigu-cham!" (or whatever that is), she's really giving her killer recipe for egg salad?

The only thing that frustrates me is when they show previews of the next episodes. The subtitles go so fast you can't watch the preview and read at the same time.

Makes me think that MIL became the owner of the company through inheritance and not hard work - that might be why she has no idea of how hard her DIL Dongji had it to work and still raise her son -- Sometimes, MIL is just plain mean - and then I say aigu - aigu - ;D
