Sonya is that girl Eva from the talk show with all the foreign beauties (sorry, I don't know it's name). They did a piece on her being on this drama on an entertainment show awhile ago but back then I didn't realize this show would be shown in Chicago so I didn't pay much attention. I think she sounds pretty good speaking Korean. In Likable, they really haven't said too much about her background. All we know is that she rents a room from Chan's uncle and that everyone except Chan's mother likes her very much. I sense there will be a love triangle eventually between her, Chan's dad and Chan's mom.

Supposedly, Sonya is from Kazakhstan (or one of those central Asian "Stan" nations - I don't recall exactly). Sonya explains that a lot of ethnic Koreans headed to Central Asia during the Japanese occupation, and that she learned to speak Korean from a friend there. The actress, Eva Popeil (no relation, as far as I know, to Ron Popeil, of "Kitchen Magician" fame) is reportedly half Japanese, half English. And, I must say that I find her quite an appealing actress!

Thanks! How interesting. I wonder if she got the role through her appearances on the Foreign Beauties Talk Show. As I recall, that's somewhat close to the actual name of the show. It showed up once on the display on my television set, but that function is spotty and doesn't always work. Someone told me that she was linked romantically to Ahn Jae Wook (Thanks, C! ) but that he denied it. Good! Jae-Wook is mine.

She told me that the korean language the older generation speak had been mutated over the generations and they would not be able to converse with native Korean speakers. The Japanese Occupation after all ended in like what 1945/46? My mate said that though they have kept a few Korean customs, they mostly followed Russian traditions including the way their name is written (like western style). And the younger generation spoke Russian.

Oops. I fear my joke might have gone awry. For those of you who don't know, Yi, Lee and Yee are all the same name (due to differences in romanization). Hah.
And cyuser, we can't tell when you are offended and when you are not, because you are such a jokester yourself. So I think you should let us know by saying..."I'm not joking" when you are not joking. And when you are NOT joking, you should NOT say that.
You know we adore you, right? You AND K-dramas? AND Soapygrams?

Thanks Bo - I like the posters on our board - ALL of them - ;D even when I do not totally agree with them. That's what makes this board so worthwhile. We can disagree without rancor and many times, agree on some other topic. Besides, we are all NICE people, aren't we?

Okay! I found out the skinny. Sheila, although Kim IS the most popular surname in Korea, only 20% of the people are named Kim. And 15% are named Lee/Yi/Rhee (Yee as my favorite yoga guys has it).
That koreanwiz. Always coming to the rescue.

why do the characters on the drama drink water in a hurry when they are upset? i think its so funny. it is either water or soju They DO drink water in a hurry when they're upset, and many characters in this show go to the bar and gulp their drinks with the intention of getting drunk as quickly as possible when they have big problems or other disappointments. I guess it's out of frustration, but it only makes them feel much worse the next day

why are people telling sonya that she should pronounce her words better? Yeah, I don't understand either. She sounds like the others to me but then again, I don't speak Korean so I fail there.

Is there a big drinking problem in Korea? In every drama whenever the character faces something a little difficult, they drink to the point of sleeping on the table, or falling down!

I've been meaning to ask: who is Sonya (Chan's father's co-worker) and where did she come from? I missed a few of the early episodes due to bad reception, and now that she's figuring into things a little more, I find I need to know her back-story. I think she's cute, and it's neat to see her speaking Korean so well. Funny that they say her pronunciation is hard to understand. I wouldn't know! Sonya is a tennant of the pet doctors. i can't remember their names. she lives with them and pays rent . i agree, she is very cute and sweet..

If Miae doesn't grow up (said with scorn ), I hope her husband and Sonya get together. Sonya is sensitive to Chan and would be a good mother.
