Hey, Otaku, maybe you can answer a question I have, about the word "Otaku".
When I first encountered it, I attempted to look it up in a Japanese-English dictionary. I did not find it, but I did find a similar sounding word that meant something like fire or flame .
Is that the root of the word for "Fan"? Like "Having a firey passion for something"?
Or are you going, "Huh? What's he talking about?"? I don't really know how to properly look things up in a Japanese-English dictionary, so I'm mostly guessing.

Soju: it's a slang term actually, more on the same level as "geek" in English. The base word for otaku is "taku", which means house (as in, you never leave it due to your obsessions LOL). The word allegedly has a negative connotation in Japan, but in reality, it doesn't amongst the Otaku - the best example I can give of this would be the Harajuku people. Hey, they leave their houses! LOL Otherwise, when it's used, it's negative, kind of like when people describe someone as "emo", "goth", or any other type of non-mainstream stereotype. Some people in Japan think of the word as an insult, but I'm Japanese/American, and I personally don't think of it as an insult at all since there are many much worse names to be called. Especially during rush hour

I just joined today. I learned about this group from someone who works for Korean Tourist Bureau. I am a travel agent in Chicago and told him about my love for Korean dramas just last night and here I am today. I watch them on AZN comcast cable and tonight is the last episode of 'Hello My Lady'. It has also helped my 8 year old read because of the subtitles. My favorite so far has been 'Thank You'. It really was a wonderful series. I highly recommend it.
