The character of the other troupe-leader, Maehyang (sp?) has really changed for the better. Ever since the suicide of Baekmu she seems to have completely changed her life's outlook. In the beginning I saw her as crafty and cruel. (Remember how she forced young Booyong to sleep with that old man?) Her entire existence seemed to be about bringing Baekmu down.
She became less one-sided and more authentic. And no longer cold but kinder. It's obvious that she had deep affection for Jini--enough to back up Jini's desire to dance her last dance at the festival. Maehyang understood that her own life would be forfeit but she wanted to support Jini's desire to "die dancing" which was what Baekmu did in meeting her end. Maehyang wanted to die on her own terms as well.
The scene she shared with Booyong her student was touching too. She expressed her affection for Booyong and acknowledged the love that Booyong had for her. She seemed peaceful about her decision and was courageous when she took Jini's side at the festival addressed the King, and boldly declared her culpability. I think that her boldness saved her life.
