Is this drama worthy for the praises of Emperor Wang, Yi Soon shin, and Ages of Warriors? I haven't seen all of the drama to give my opinion on it but I've seen at least a quarter of it and its been a hit and miss for me. You know, I still don't know where the love came from with Chulin and Dae jo young. Was it because he took the poison out when she was bitten by a snake? I don't know....... And when did Gulbisaow (I think that's his name) begin to look up to Dae joyoung? I'm REALLY loving Bu Kiwon though.......and Xue is just flat out incredible hahahaha......In fact, I'm more interested in the enemy rather than the good guys. What do you all think? Do Dae Joyoung character grow later on? Is Chulin love triangle still the focus? AND WHERE IS SHILLA!? P.S. I saw what's in store for 2008 and 2009 and historical fans are back with a vengenece !!!!!! Now if we can confirm that they will be airing in the states...............  |

Well, this one isn't up there with Age of Warriors. But I think it's comparable to YSS. We're up to episode 62 in Philly, and it's very exciting right now because of all the strategizing and trying to outwit one another.
KBS doesn't seem to do the love story part of these dramas very well. The love triangle continues, but it's very contrived.
You may recall that DJY just about killed Gulsabiwu back when he was still a serf; this got Gulsabiwu's attention and some respect.
The action parts are very good, comparable to YSS.
Characterwise, there are a lot of compelling characters, they are not a black and white as they seemed at the beginning. The only truly annoying character continues to be Shin Hong (why does this actor always play slime balls?). Whereas in YSS there was a host of annoying characters and I thought the political parts kind of dragged. Here the only parts that drag are those that switch back to the Tang emporor. Not enough of the Empress.
The music for the most part is very good, better than YSS and AOW
If you aren't there yet, you will see a BIG change in DJY's character starting around episode 50. And even the "bad guys" will often turn around and do something unexpected and make you realize they are more than one-note villains.
Also plenty of the characters are very easy on the eyes.

AOW had as low ratings as 7% in Korea while DJY's hightest rating was 35% and it has been the 'Emperor of the Dramas' for the past 7 weeks as the Korean media calls it.

;D I really like this one because I am viewing it as a drama rather than an historical documentary. As in every good drama, there is a love story of sorts, in this case it's the double triangle of Chulin-DJY and Li Kaigu - Chulin - DJY and Princess S now his wife. It's not difficult to figure out the attraction between DJY and Chulin - he's a warrior and she's also a warrior; they have a deep respect for each other; BESIDES, in times of extreme danger, sexual attraction is heightened,  THAT IS, according to many psychologists LOL I'm not a fan of MOST "action"/violence type stories, however, I have enjoyed watching the battle scenes in this show.  It's a nice break from some of the "modern day" K-dramas.  Good to view a story without a nasty MIL for a change - LOL ;D |

Good to view a story without a nasty MIL for a change - LOL ;D Heheheh...well, I don't think any of those psychologists have watched the early scenes involving Chulin and DYJ.....Her attraction to him started way before he became a certified warrior....During their first encounter, DYJ had been captured by the Khitans thinking he was a Tang spy....The details are a little hazy, but he does manage to escape I think by taking Chulin as a hostage. The dramatic scene that captures her heart the first time was when she was bitten by that snake and DYJ sucks all the venom out saving her life....Warrior or not, what woman wouldn't be impressed by such an act of courage and selflessness? It is safe to say that she fell in love with a man who embodied certain virtues that she greatly admired.... |

Are we watching the same drama??The action comparable to IYSS and the music better? The only music I can even remember is in the beginning of each episode. There is NO comparison between the action scenes !!! Yes, last week was interesting with the mind games going on and it was very intriguing but..... There are compelling characters and I think you can tell exactly what each one is really like. The first time I saw Shin Hong I knew he was up to something. The love triangle seems to be a little modern day k-drama injected into an historical. No offense, but you can't put these dramas on the same level. One is fun watching and the other was life changing and challenging.

Well, there was plenty of good music in YSS, but try to recall that there was also some VERY sappy music that would come on whenever there was a "tender" moment. Plus I didn't like the juxtaposition of the European classical music with the original music. Eg the dreary Peer Gynt music that was played when YSS got shot. (But then, I was never fond of Peer Gynt). So far Dae Jo Young has had some repetitive music, but I like it all, and much of it is very expressive of what's going on in the scene. So I give the edge to DJY.

Episodes 124 and 125 just completed this past weekend.....It is still a good series, but as always, there is massive room for improvement. Media-Korea channel, somehow showed one episode without the original transmission from KBS-America (so no English subs!). I plan to call them today about that....

DJY is my first historical drama so I'm gaga over it, the scenery, acting, music, it's all new to me and very compelling. I haven't seen that many contemporary dramas either (6 to date) but asidr from Chill Sisters, I can miss an episode here and there without too much worry. They all seem to follow the same formula, as you guys point out, but its an interesting formula.

I was hooked the first time I saw the show. I was just channel surfing and came across it. Now I can't wait until Saturday and Sunday Nights to watch the show and see what is going to happen next.
I am going to miss DJY when it is over. I think I am going to cry. Boo Hoo

Hey dude: DJY far out ranked the others previously mentioned, not saying they were not good, but they did not have Choi Soo Jong, he is a remarkable historical epic drama actor, he deserves all the accolades that is bestowed upon him, along with the whole cast and the crew of DJY remarkable, absolutely remarkable. I will miss my sat/sun watching him.

A Land based version of "Emperor Of The Sea "
No im kidding i love it aside from the overlong DYCL segmant that tested the patience of the best of us its great ,it has really improved in great strides from ep 90 onwards ,i dont even mind the plot holes .
Ill tell you this much since it has been reduced to 2 nights a week from 5 i feel a huge gap Wed-Fri and as AZN will probably replace it with some soap there will be a major loss in my tv veiwing .
I can only compare it to
DAE JANG GEUM
EMPEROR OF THE SEA
JUMONG
HWANG JINI
CONSPIRACY IN THE COURT
4 GUARDIAN GODS/FIRST KING
And its easily the best with only Emperor and Conspiracy (although thats YI Dynasty )coming close .
