Is it just me or has the character of Li Kaigu become less cartoonish? The actor's performance seems less one-dimensional. He showed great independence when he didn't take bro Hong's advice and instead continued to stand with the Queen against the would be Crown Prince.

I think you are right. One indication that his character is broadening is that we don't see that patented Li Kaigu Sneer nearly as often. He heeded Shin Hong's advice in this way: Hong said that they are on one boat but must be ready to jump to the other boat when the first one begins to list. So they threw themselves behind Empress Wu Zetian...for now. Of course, they are Khitans to the core, and want nothing more than their own sovereign state no matter who has the Tang throne.
Does anyone else think that Emperor Li and King Bojang look very much alike?

Turning his back on the crown prince and walking out the door took huge cojones. But he already showed he had them in the scene when he met the empress (which I think is one of the best scenes of the whole series so far), when he threw her own letter in her face and demanded action. It's getting harder and harder to dislike this guy!

I, who have not liked LiKaigu since he first appeard, came to like him when he did the walkout on the prince. As he listened to the desparate offer that CP was making I was momentarily fearful that he would take him up on his offer... but, BUT wait, an ever so small smirk appeared ... and then the wonderful walk out! At that point, Smirkster made me experience a little turnaround in respecting him.

i don't think i'm spoiling anything to say that Li Kaigu & Dae Jo Young will have a more direct rivalry later on (at least, that's what they've said in the narration!), so i think they're taking this opportunity to really fine tune how worthy an opponent he is....
i think he has shown that already (such as to Xue Rengui, who is comforted in Li Kaigu is helping him), but there's less of the baggage of the sneer or the love triangle.
Can't wait to see what's next!

OOPS!! I rented a movie from Netflix and the male star was none other than Jong Bo Sok, better known as Li Kaigu. The surprise was that he did two backside nude scenes. The film is from 2000, and oh my, he looked as skinny as a toothpick. Teehee.
