Hi guys! I'm new to this board. Love Korean historical dramas. Won't you guys tell me if you think DJY is interesting? I'm thinking about buying the dvd series from KBS and I don't mind spending 400 dollars, but, if I'm going to spend that much, I'd like to know that the show is interesting and high in quality. Won't some of you give me your thoughts? Thank you.
Saurabi
PS I really like the constumes and art of Korean historical dramas.

To be absolutely, brazenly, blunt, I’d (so far) rank “Dae Jo Young” as probably the second WORST historical K-drama I’ve seen (the worst was “Dawn of the Empire”). Yes folks: I’ve been way disappointed with DJY. That silly, relentless Chulin romantic triangle, and their free-and-loose reporting of historical facts just isn’t doing it for me. Now, if you can convince KBS to sell you the K-drama “Emperor Wang Guhn” instead, I’d say that’s worth $400. It fudged a bit on the history, too, but it was otherwise so good I can let that slide. EWG was terrific. Now, that's just MY Two Cents, everybody, so don't take it personal. If you're digging DJY, it's plenty cool with me.

i wouldn't call Dae Jo Yong the worst ...a slow start, and none of the local momentum as , say, the Immortal Yi Soon-Shin, but it's gotten much better.
i would agree with Mikey that if you're going to pay money (esp. $400)...Emperor Wang Guhn would be the one to buy.
i would also highly recommend "The great Jang Geum" (AKA "Jewel in the Palace"). The story & acting were great, & this board's founder, Michael Han, did the fantastic subtitles.

I just have to log on for a short time to join in support of jp's comments about Dae Jang Geum. Over a period of time I did invest in the entire set ($250) and know that I will watch it once over 18 months. And Michael's subtitles enhanced what we saw. Beautiful story, cinematography, music, acting skills ... 5stars across the board.
I'm liking DJY more with each passing episode. I know it's not historically accurate, but the story transports me to a fascinating time out of the 21st century.

I'd like to highly recommend (if you have any chances to watch this drama) "Tears of the Dragon" (KBS 1996.11.24 - 1998.05.31, 159 Episodes) as a Korean historical drama masterpiece. It is historically very acurate and terrific. This series is currently unavailable on DVD, but KBS may release it in the future. The founder of Chosun dynasty had very ambitious sons, so power struggles between them were inevitable. This drama follows Lee Bang-Won, that is the 5th son's life. He became the ultimate winner of the bloody power game and the 3rd king by killing his brothers and making his father helpless, but was cursed by his father for that. Next is a part of one of the final episodes. dory.mncast.com/mncHMovie.swf?movieID=10006717320061127233751Summary of the video clip above: When his father died and the funeral is being prepared, Lee Bang-Won looks back upon the past, i.e. the conflict between his father and him - killing his half brother (the crown prince) kneeling down and begging for life, throwing a dead animal upon his step mother, his father yelling out "You are a beast!" at him, shooting an arrow at him, and swaying a weapon to kill him, a call of his soldiers to slaughter his brothers, his mother's death and crying siblings of him, and so on. He realizes the uncertainty of life, and tears of remorse begin to come out of his eyes. Finally he cries on the ground: "Father, father I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."

......(the worst was “Dawn of the Empire”). ...... Why do you think this was the worst??? I liked it... ....and their free-and-loose reporting of historical facts just isn’t doing it for me. .... These shows aren't listed as "documentaries" (facts), or even "docu-dramas" (facts + made up story line), they are listed as "dramas"...(stories which are solely the creation of the writer)..... Just curious as to why it's OK for EWG to "fudge" w/ history, but not the other historical dramas.....

saurabi, here in Chicago we're only on Episode 56 and it's just too early to make a judgment about the whole series. Still dozens of episodes left, and if it's true that the series is being extended, then we're not even halfway through it yet. So there's still a lot of time for it to take a big swing for the better or for the worse.
There have been some weak points with the series but there have been some great episodes too. I don't think it will end up being anywhere near as good as "Immortal Yi Soon-Shin" but it's been fun and certainly better than just about any other series on TV right now (which isn't saying much, I know).
If you're really eager to spend $400 on a series, then by all means buy IYSS. Especially if you didn't see it when it was broadcast, it's well worth the money and you'll enjoy it very much.
Welcome to the forum and please do stick around, because I'm sure the viewers here will give you their verdicts when DJY ends.

If they're talking about extending it, how can it be ready for sale already? There's usually some kind of time lag, but if it isn't known how many eps. there are... huh? Has it been done by the network, or is it some kind of videotape off the Korean broadcast, without subtitles? (I have a suspicious mind. ;D )

Just curious as to why it's OK for EWG to "fudge" w/ history, but not the other historical dramas..... We let EWG and The Great Jang Geum slide because the acting is really good, and they make the most of even supporting characters, and give us stories that we can relate to, even in Modern Day America (though we aren't the target audience). Also, at least Emperor Wang Guhn had the narrator explain the "true" history , and let us know some times when they took creative license. But if the acting and story aren't on par, then details such as historocal accuracy can get to us, & magnify our negative feelings.

Thanks for the info, guys. I know some koreans who say the show is not popular in Korea. They say 'Chumong' is much better.
Looks like I'll be buying the 100 hour 'Yi Sun Shin' even though I already have the 32 hour version. I hope it's worth it. Lastly, I already saw 'Dae Jang Geum' and thought it was great.
You guys take care and thank you for the welcome. I've been reading this board for over two years, I think. I'm glad to be here.

If you have the edited IYSS set then you're going to be much, much happier with the full version. It's been discussed elsewhere in the forum and I won't repeat it, but the bottom line is that the editing in the smaller set is just brutal and it completely destroys the pace and the story development. So yes it absolutely will be worth it (assuming you enjoyed what you saw and want to see more).

I am now watching ep 70 and it is really getting more and more interesting that I can wait for the weekend. In Korea they have already shown up to ep 74 so I would really get it. Granted that there were a few slow episodes but it goes down well.
