I read recently that they were actually Shila spies sent to Yeon's household to spy on the family and set the sons against each other. True or not? This is quite different from how the story portrays them.

I wouldn't know, So Sad, but that's very interesting. Where did you read this?
[glow=red,2,300]Truth[/glow] (or anyone who might have information on this), do you know if the Shin brothers were actually spies? Or is this fiction?

Shin Sung is a real person, however, it is not known whether he had a brother or not. Shin Sung was not a spy, he was a Goguryeo-born person that betrays his country and opens the gate of Pyongyang fortress for the Tang armies to come in over some stupid treasure sent by the Chinese.

Ignore this thread. I did more research(its not like I know everything about Korean history) and found out that Shin Sung is not a real person either. However, there was a fortress called the Shin Fortress and Sa Bu Gu(whom I just discovered was actually a real person, but spelled with different characeters) opens the gate of the Shin Fortress, helping the Tang army to come in. The characters have to be different because like I said before, one cannot have a name that means "the enemy of the teacher and the father." Conclusion : Shin Sung and Shin Hong are fictional characters.

If you have "The Histories of Three Kingdoms (Samguk sagi)", you could find his name on the passage of September 668 (27th year of King Bojang). He opens the gate of Pyeongyang Fortress, helping the Tang Army to come in. In the capital city of Koguryo, he did the same thing Sa Bu-gu did in Shin Fortress 1 year ago.

I was surfing the internet for information on Shila and came across that piece of information. Unfortunately, I did not take down the source. But I do remember its from a China site.
