Just saw the fight between DJY and Li Kaigu. I did not know that I am so bloodthirsty. I felt so disappointed that Li Kaigi was wounded but alive. He broke the alliance with DJY, goes over to Liadong thinking it would be an easy invasion, yet when DJY tries to stop him from leaving, he sounds so aggrieved that DJY is essentially signing Khitan's death warrant. As Sudol would say "blasted bastard!".

i don't know why Khitans love Li Kaigu. He is so dumb. Every battle he is in, he has never won anything. He got caught by that guy Li Wen, he got tricked by Xue Rengui... He can even protect his father in-law. He is blind by the hate of DJY and DJS .... what a loser! every time he cames on the screen. He is a bitter and anger man...

Yea, when is Li Kagu and the rest of the Khitans going to realize that shin song killed the previous Khan and was basically the fall of khitan because of his hatred for DJY. Its al Shin song's fault

EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWW! I just saw the preview for episode 119 on the KBS web site and I almost wish I hadn't. When the episode airs next week, can someone please explain to me why on earth Li Haigu...
would gouge his own eye out with (what appears to be) a broken arrow.
Is he totally bonkers?

Well, I haven't seen the preview in question, but you know Li Kaigu has never struck me as the picture of perfect mental health, and things keep going from bad to worse. Maybe Shin Hong convinced him this was a good idea, Sir Shin not always having all his marbles present either.

Now I could understand Shin gouging out HIS eye - especially after he looked in a mirror - I'd be scared of that face too - but Li Kaigu??? Guess we'll have to wait for that episode to play -

Well, I haven't seen the preview in question, but you know Li Kaigu has never struck me as the picture of perfect mental health, and things keep going from bad to worse. Maybe Shin Hong convinced him this was a good idea, Sir Shin not always having all his marbles present either. Lee Hae Go is not crazy ... it was the only way he could prove his loyalty to Seol In Gui. Even though DJY spared his life (he gave Lee Hae Go the choice of death or swearing allegiance to him) he escaped Anshi castle to ask Seol In Gui to take him under his wings. Since he was mortal enemy of Seol In Gui and was not trusted, he had to do something really extreme to prove his loyalty. After he did that he said that he would use the remaining good eye to seek out DJY ... such is his hatred. DJY gave LHG a chance only because DJS reminded his son of the time when DJY came looking for his father to be with even in danger, just like Geom did for LHG ... and how that would severely damage DJY's relationship with Geom. LHG refuse the poison given to him by Mimosa because he said that he had too many thing he still had to do. Also in the preview, the Khitan people at Anshi wants Geom to be their king and fight DJY. It's going to be interesting how he's going to handle that.

Much thanks for the info. I'm afraid I'm a spoiler junkie. However, the transliteration of these names is going to drive me up the wall - I finally figured out that Seol In Gui in your version is Xue Ren-gui in mine. Sigh.
Anyway, though I was being flip, of course, I can't resist commenting that when a man is so completely captive to his hatred and obsession that he'll gouge out an eye to prove his loyalty to an enemy just to try to get revenge, then "not a picture of perfect mental health" is not an unfair description. It doesn't mean crazy - just not firing on all mental health cylinders.
As for Geom - yes, that will certainly be interesting, but given the norms of historical melodrama, I expect the upright young man will somehow manage to remain upright. We'll see.

Here is the link to the KBS previews page. www.kbs.co.kr/drama/daejoyoung/view/preview/index.htmlWe're only up to episode 67 in Philly, but Li Haigu already shows signs of needing a good shrink. Can you imagine him on the Dr. Phil show? And from the spoilers it looks like there are plenty of plot twists and turns to look forward too.

Hi. This is no way meant to be a smart answer - it's what I do myself when I want to know how the historical aspects of one of these historical dramas play out. Check Korean history. I use this web site a lot: koreanhistoryproject.org Look in the section "Korea in the eye of the tiger" - then in chapter 3 (Paekche and Silla) under "unified Silla". To answer your main question, no Dae Jo-young does not die; he becomes the ruler of a large, multi-ethnic kingdom covering North Korea and much of Manchuria called Parhae (or Palhae or Balhae - spelling varies). The location of this kingdom, which lasted about 200 years, from 698 to the early 900s, is one of the reasons China claims this is Chinese history. It was eventually conquered by the Khitans. I don't know what happens to the non-historical characters, but of the historical ones, Gulsabiwu was a co-founder of Parhae and Li Kaigu was apparently still alive in the early 800s. However Jo-young's father was apparently killed in the military encounters that defeated the Tang forces in 697-8 (some of this history is pretty cloudy), after which Empress Wu recognized the new kingdom and appointed Dae the Duke of Chin. A few years later, he was invested by her successor as king of Parhae. He died around 619 or so and was succeeded by one of his sons. Of course, the series takes many liberties with history. The real Xue Ren-gui died around 683, but was too good a character to let go, so he's still directing the Tang armies fifteen years after his actual departure from the scene. The Khitan people were Mongolian nomads who had far less to do with the founding of Parhae than Gulsabiwu's Malgal people. Etc. etc. The real history is of interest to fans of the series only insofar as it gives you an outline of what's going to happen.
