Thank heaven for English subtitles or I'd be screwed.
That brings up another thing I've always been curious about. Does anyone know if the subtitles (in English) are the same everywhere, or do the local broadcasters provide them. I've read threads where noticeably different spellings for the same character are discussed, made me wonder about the 'translations' of their dialog. Stuff does get lost in translation, and I wonder what I might be losing. There are lengthy, heated exchanges that are shown in single sentences that I feel must be losing some impact, or might lead to a better understanding of motives if translated a bit more completely.
Another spin, I wonder if it might be possible to have different interpretations and sympathies (or lack of) for the same character. While he is definitely a flawed character, I find some sympathy for Li Kaigu in spite of his madness. Some, but certainly not all, of his motivation has not been for personal glory, but for his state and his family. As a viewer I have the advantage of knowing the mechanizations happening around him, while he doesn't. Other posters simply hate him, makes me wonder as asked earlier if different translations might alter what we think about the character in different areas.
Another question, and I'll stop. The death of Chulin puzzles me greatly. In spite of her sacrifice in giving herself up in the trade for DJS, etc. , DJY orders Geom away from her body (principally Li Kaigu's body of course). He seems to be making Geom and Chulin both pay for his anger toward Li Kaigu. Seems to me he could at minimum could have allowed Geom to return Chulin's body back to her countrymen, or Mimosa might have pointed that out, etc. Instead, Geom is not allowed to deal with his mother who was not an enemy, and by all appearances a hero for the 'great cause'. He can visit their graves later just didn't cut it for me.
Just my ramblings, 1/2 hr to #133
