I've seen this in other shows, too. Why does one pound a dried fish with a mallet before cooking it? Is it that hard to break it up? Perhaps I'll by a dried pollack to see, but then I might have to get the special fish mallet, too . . .

Pound dried fish? My mom cooks dried pollack. It's very good but I've never seen her pound it...

My mom does that sometimes...I don't remember exactly, but she said something like it helps to soften up the fish so it's easier to tear off into pieces.

Hm. I never thought of that. Maybe. I can see that. But tear off into pieces before its cooked? Because when it IS cooked, it's pretty soft and easy to tear...
