Okay, we’ve already hashed out the “KBS’s Weird Drama Titles” topic out a few times elsewhere on this board, but I’m so impressed with this drama that I’ve still got to vent a bit . . .
What’s the deal with KBS America calling this drama “War of the Roses?” Yes, yes, I know it’s supposed to be the name of the café where Sungmoon proposed to Soonie (actually, I wonder about that, but since I can’t read Hangul, I’ll have to take them at their word on this). But honestly, what a terrible title choice for such a remarkable drama!
Furthermore, get this: “War of the Roses” was also the title of an MBC drama from 2004 – a drama that also featured actress Choi Jin-shil (“Soonie”) at the lead character! Talk about confusion!
Now, the alternative title, “My Rosy Life” (which comes much closer, I understand, to the original Korean) is such a WONDERFUL title, since it works in both an ironic manner (we all know that Soonie’s life has been a hard one) and also in a hopeful manner (despite everything, perhaps Soonie will be able to look back and think that she’s lived a happy life after all).
At least KBS America ultimately decided to title their DVD version of this drama “My Rosy Life.” Better late than never, I guess.

And isn't the theme song entitled "Ma Vie en Rose"? My life in/colored? rose/pink?

That's the Edith Piaf song. But, I must say, since i'm not an edith piaf fan, that the Korean version is much more pleasing to the ears. :-)

By the way, Mikey, isn't the sign on the cafe "War of the Roses" in English--I thought I saw that. At least, I remember the sign was in English.

When they showed it intially (way back when) I thought I saw English, too. But, I went back to my tapes and just couldn't find the specific scene. However, when the showed the cafe again (I think it was episode #22 - Chicago hasn't gotten there yet) I looked real close and didn't see any English. So, I thought I got it wrong the first time. But, if you saw English too, then I guess I wasn't imagining things after all! |

I saw it when Soonie first passes it, she's crying in the rain. It's just before she has the memory of him running out into the street when she refused to marry him. She's walking in the rain, crying, and sees the cafe, and has that memory.

I thought it was like a neon-colored sequence of signs in Korean. Hmmmmm
Bo, I too think that Piaf was tough, but her voice was set to annoying kind of opera all the time. *shrugs*

FWIW, I am archiving this show as "Rosy Life." I also archived "Wedded Bliss" as "Wedding", "Diary of Three Spinsters" (spinsters? In this day and age??) as "Old Miss Diary." I have been cut down by my striving for authenticity, though. When I first saw the title "Farewell to Tears" on KBS's site, using my trusty Korean-English dictionary I came up with "The Sad Goodbye", which means something else entirely.  |

I've never understood how KBS World/America goes about deciding drama titles. In part, why do they even feel the need to change some of the drama titles? Why change "Wedding" to "Wedded Bliss"? What was the point of that? And how do you get "Love Lost in Time" from "She's Come back/She's Returned"? It's so stupid it's beyond comprehension.
Soju, I think Farewell to Sorrow is a better title.

The actual translation of "War of Roses" is "Rosy Life".
This may be part of spoiler but at the end of the episode Soonie says something important regarding the cafe name "Rosy Life" and this is why it became the title of the drama.
No offense to the new naming except that I've seen quite a few dramas with same title. It would've served the purpose of the drama better if they went with the literal translation.
"Rosy Life" - It doesn't sound that awkward - or is it to native English-speakers? That's it sound too corny or something?

As I type this, I am looking at the covers of my newly acquired ost's of this and another show, and laughing so hard at all of the effort and frustration expended on this topic (here and in other threads) because THERE AIN'T NO ENGLISH TITLES ON EITHER OF 'EM!!! Perhaps it's a different story when it comes to the videos, but if it weren't for the pictures, I'd have no clue as to what I'm holding here.  |

PS - my video says "Rose Life" on the cover, and has the names of the actors in English. However, when you look at the DVD playlist menu, it's in Korean and you just have to click and hope for the best.
