I feel so incredibly bad for her. She's too good for her own good. Seriously. It makes me mad that she lets people run over her like that and all the while, she stays silent. Why? She says it's about her pride, but it only seems to me she does it because that's all she's ever known. She's not like her spunky sister who tells off the first guy she sees for doing something that ticks her off. She's like a worn rug. Poor lady. She deserves better than her stupid, worthless husband and In-laws.

Boy, did Soonie ever give her husband a beating on tonight's episode (more than once). That was probably the most physical violence I've seen on a modern-day K-drama. (It almost looked like she really was kicking, hitting, slapping, etc.) ----Her acting is very credible, especially the painful crying, mournful sobbing, vicious anger, feelings of betrayal, etc.

It might have been mentioned before, but the actress who plays Soonie just went through a divorce as well.
I think this is her first drama after it...so i would imagine some of her emotions are real. It makes me feel for her even more...

It makes me feel for her even more... Melissa Melissa, you're right, I did read that recently here. I'm glad you reminded me. Her own pain then is certainly enhancing her performance, but how very sad that is. We really sense the extreme emotions which are played out in her facial expressions, physical anger, shock at seeing her husband with the other woman, reaching out for support by phoning her sister in the middle of in the night only to be hung up on. It certainly amplifies her role because we're witnessing a peformance on two levels at once.

I’m maybe ¾ of the way through this drama, and honestly, I think it’s likely to end up as my favorite (non-historical) K-drama of 2005. Soonie is such a wonderful character. She’s naïve, to be sure – but she’s hardly stupid. She’s a lot tougher than she looks, and she can be frighteningly stubborn at times. And, just like a real-life human being, when you expect her to do something obvious, she goes and does the unexpected instead. Her character is turning what might otherwise be just another ordinary, predictable drama into something terrific. I just read (over in the “Immortal Yi Soon-shin” thread) that actor Kim Myoung-min won the 2005 KBS best actor award. I agree – that was well deserved. I don’t yet know the winners of the other drama categories, but if I were voting, I’d unhesitatingly pick Choi Jin-shil (“Soonie”) as 2005’s best actress, and Lee Tae-ran (Youngie”) as 2005’s best supporting actress. First-rate acting performances from both of them in this drama. As you can probably tell, I’m really impressed with “War of the Roses.”

Thank you for your impressions of this drama, mikey. It is good that you are recommending this show so highly, to keep some fans hanging in there during the weak signal situation. Some of the Chicago-area viewers are getting quite discouraged lately, due to the very poor reception in their areas. Some very loyal fans have had to give up on WOCH for now, simply because of the weak signal, since they cannot get a clear-enough picture to follow a story any longer.

Be careful, though. I haven't followed Knov1's link, but I followed a link on Koreanwiz to a similar story in an online newspaper, and the description of "My Rosy Life" there (provided in connection with the actress's win) contains a major spoiler.

Oh, never mind--I see that the link here is just to another portion of the Chicago board. The link I followed was to a story at times.hankooki.com, so be careful if you go there.

Lucy, what a disappointment to find a spoiler in the news. Soon-ie is the only mature person in the show, besides her sister. Everyone else is selfish, and whiny about it, too. I don't know how much longer I can stand them. But the mistress of her father-in-law at least provides some laughs. The MIL and SIL are major sour grumps!

Lucy, what a disappointment to find a spoiler in the news. Yup, it just about ruined it for me, though the preliminary comments of other people here who had already seen it had pretty much done the same thing already--this news item just nailed it down for me. Regarding the newspaper item, they at least had the excuse of being able to assume that their readership had already seen the entire show, as it has already finished in Korea. By the way, Lee Tae-ran did not win a drama award for her work in the show, but she did win the "Popularity" award.

One, who here thinks that Soonie is dying? I have this bad feeling that she is everytime she clutches her stomach or something. Maybe not dying, but it's definitely something serious.

I hope not, but I don't know. At first I thought she was pregnant. We'll just have to stay tuned to see what's going on. That grandma irritates the living daylights out of me. Oh and so does the sister-in-law. Such lazy and whiny wenches. I'm glad when she refused to take care of the baby. Oh and can anyone say double standard? It's okay for the son/brother to cheat, but not if it's your husband or father? SIL was so mad at her dad about having two wives and yet she excuses her brother for doing the same thing. I think that the point the show is trying to make is that no matter what or who, there is always a victim when somebody cheats.

Thank You, Knov1! It's a bit of a relief to see that I wasn't the only one so highly praising actress Choi Jin-shil's performace (as "Soonie") in this drama. Folks, even if you know what's going to happen in the future, keep watching. "War of the Roses" is still a good one.
