I watched Episode 39 Monday night and the first 10 minutes again Tuesday afternoon. Something struck me the second time around. Seoyoung's mom (Mrs. Jang?), went by their old house and noted that Mr. Jang's name plate was still up. (Sorry if I got the family name wrong--you know who I mean.) Then she went to the office building they "used to" own, and saw her husband coming out. She asked him what he was doing there, and he said he had some business to take care of. She mentioned that his name plate was still on the house, and he said they must not have sold the house yet. He offered to get her a cab to go home, and she replied that they couldn't afford a cab, she would take the subway. After she's gone, Mr. Jang wonders to himself if he's being too harsh, and concludes that he must see this through to the end.
I think the bankruptcy was a sham. He pretended that they were wiped out and had lost the house and the building and all of their possessions in order to make his wife realize that being poor was not the worst thing in the world, to get her down off her financial high-horse and see that although Jungwoo's family was poor they were still decent, respectable people. And she is beginning to deal with being poor, just as he had hoped, insisting on taking the subway instead of taking a cab and telling Ilho's wife that Seoyoung's boyfriend was a nice, hard-working boy who runs a noodle factory. Granted, she had to save some face, but still.
How does their nephew fit into this? He seemed genuinely distressed about the bankruptcy, or didn't he know about Mr. Jang's tricks, or was he just going along to help persuade Mrs. Jang?

I was thinking the same thing. If that's true, it doesn't look like the nephew is in on it.

Wow, chi8, that's an excellent theory! And it fits his character very well. He never did seem terribly upset about the situation.

Except that in his office, he collapsed when he heard the news. And all those women came into their house like vultures, grabbing what they wanted. And he told his nephew to bid on the building he lost. So he definitely had a setback, I think. (It wasn't a performance for his wife, because she wasn't there.)
Turning Seo-young's cafe over to Hye-sun was real, too. (I think). Still, the father asked, am I being too harsh? Hope it's partly sham.
I guess the mother is learning to cope. I was afraid she'd blow the month's allowance by paying for lunch with Yeo-jin's mother, so as not to seem poor, but maybe she's more sensible than that.

I'm with ginnycat on this one. If he wasn't in such a dire situation, why would he be enduring these demeaning episodes begging for money from Hye-sun and Ilho?

Whoa! That's what I get for commenting without actually watching for a couple of weeks! (Lost the remote. Long story. Catching up now...LOL)
Turning over the cafe to Hye-sun wouldn't be a big deal, would it? She's "friendly," LOL.

I think we might find that he made other arrangements with Hyesun besides turning the cafe over to her.

Oh, yeah, we didn't hear them talking. I was surprised that after Jung-woo left, the next bit was them saying goodbye outside the restaurant.

Hmm. i've put lots and lots of thought to this theory...and...i think it is entirely possible. BUT...I think that perhaps the dad loves his family too much to make them feel the pain of poverty. Although...it's not really poverty...more like restricted spending living. This is a great chance for Jungwoo though b/c now he can help seoyeoung's mom understand what it feels like. He can also supply them with yummie noodles cuz maybe they too poor to buy

Watch out guys, you might piss off the Ginnycat. She's got hot coffee...

PS - Did someone say Mr Jang (Seo-young's dad) might be Jung-woo's dad, too? I highly doubt it. They might have dated, however, and he might be "Swallow" who wanted to marry her at one time. Children are not necessarily the outcome of "dating" (lucky thing, too!!). LOL.

And I just saw that scene in the office where he fainted after hearing the bad news and had to go to the hospital. If he was shamming that, I'll eat my hat.
'course, I don't have any hats...

Hye-sun said Mr. Jang and his wife used to go to her bar. So I don't think they were dating.
