Sumi's mother was alarmed when Sumi told her that she was dating, not just friends with, an African-American guy. The mother thinks they are seriously a couple, since they have been friends or dating for 2 years. Younger Grandpa was very upset as well, because the guy isn't Korean and because Sumi said she would move in with him if the parents tried to break them up. In the phone call last night Sumi claimed they weren't that serious, so Younger Grandpa relaxed, but his wife said Sumi was just lying and was really serious about him. Both parents are upset because they have worked very hard to give Sumi advantages in education and, tho she's becoming a lawyer and studying hard, she won't obey her parents, and they feel that she should give them the respect of listening to them, especially since they haven't been living the way they would like if they only wanted their own pleasure, it's all been work, to benefit Sumi.

Thank you ginnycat5 for clarifying that. I figure it would be a shock for them since there so traditional but I wonder what they expect if they come to the u.s. that's a normal thing now in days. They should have known that she would become more independent here and would have a say so in who she spends the rest of her life with. ;D

The other part, Raven (maybe you are not thinking about because you are but a waif of a girl, LOL), is that even though he is the "younger grandpa" he's actually an older father. He must be about 60, wouldn't you think? And his wife, too. I think they were married later in life, like the 3rd floor aunts were. So, even if he were a wild-and-crazy musician in his youth, by this time, when Sunmi is in her 20s, he's pretty settled in his ideas and conformities. He's just having trouble wrapping his mind around this stuff.
But maybe he's not as old as that even. At the least, he must be as old as Older Aunt (55?).

It's hard to tell how old people are in this show. I mean, look at the age difference between Kyung-hwa (Older Aunt) and her sister Kyung-ju. At the beginning of this series we were all guessing that KH was around 50 (because I think they said so) and KJ maybe 6 years younger. I had no idea she was as young as 39! You make a good point about Younger Grandpa, Bo. I never thought about it, but yeah, he must have settled down to marriage and selling toilets after his illustrious music career. (Oh, what a comedown that must have been.) I would put him maybe in the mid- to late 50s. His wife looks about that age or maybe a little younger. Low to mid 50s for her. And sunny, with some patches of fog. I was surprised, BTW, that Younger Grandma was upset at the age difference between Auntie and the Rocker. I didn't think that mattered, especially as it's under 10 years. I like Younger Grandpa. I think he's handsome. And like almost every character in this show (actually, I can't think of an exception), he is fully fleshed out and 3-dimensional. Gosh, I wish this show were available on DVD. Every time Hana makes me laugh out loud I wish it again.

Bo If Younger Grandpa and Younger Grandma are brother and sister, I can't imagine their mother was having him while she (Younger Grandma) was having older Aunt. I sort of thought they grew up together, with Grandpa. If Kyung-wa is 48, and Younger Grandpa is 58, that's still a huge age difference between siblings. Maybe he didn't give up his music when he got married and had a child, and that's why his wife took Sumi to the US, to get some financial security. Or maybe I'm just overthinking this.

Ginny, I can't say I remember this or just have an impression about it, but they have made a big too-doo that Younger Grandpa was the "late in life" child of the family. I think he may very well be not much older than Kyung-hwa. They also made a big thing that Older Grandpa is much, much older than Younger. He is almost treated like a (neer-do-well) son of the family, isn't he? Rather like he's the disappointing older son, and when the Executive came along (What's His Name, as I like to call him, LOL), they heaved a huge sigh of relief that they got a good one. LOL.
But, you may be right about the wife and Sumi. Although he is apparently a good salesman, he seems to require a lot of supervision, so he probably wasn't a great provider before he got in with his brother's business.
