I thought this scene was so cute/hilarious. When Grandpa is talking to Grandma about his sister and then Grandma keeps saying sistress instead of stress. Grandpa makes her say "Stress. S-t-r-e-s-s. (and proceeds to spell it in English.). When she still says "sistress" he just slaps his forhead and lays back down. I kind of have a feeling that Grandma was never too bright a girl. Maybe she was just really pretty and warm and loving.

Probably not, since she voted for Hyun-sik because her vote "always goes to the loser," LOL. I don't think she was the pretty one, but she sure is good natured and simple and kind. I think she'd have to be with that witch for a sister-in-law. I think she was a good cook and a dutiful DIL, and that Grandpa Duk-bae, in spite of his airs, really loves her deeply. (It seems she rears up and roars when pushed too hard, though.) Bo

I got a big kick out of that scene, too. His spelling it in English was funny and weird. I don't really get their relationship--I mean I get what we see now, but our first introduction to the character of Grandma was through the fact that she had walked out in protest against, I believe, the behavior Grandpa is exhibiting now. Are we to understand that this is something she does periodically when he criticizes her and pushes her around too much? If so, I can't just forgive him, saying, "aww, he really loves her anyway," since it obviously bothers her deep down. I like Grandpa and enjoy his crotchety ways, but if she's in the position of ignoring it until she's had enough and has to get out of there, that's not very pleasant for her! I wish he would be a little nicer, if that's the case. Poor li'l Grandma, who, by the way, looks like she's about 25 years younger than the actor playing her husband and just has some spray-in gray to make her look older.

As Lady Jung from DJG, I mean? I see her in a lot of stuff, mostly unsubtitled. She was also the Alzheimer's grandma from Green Prairie. Most of the time I've seen her, her hair has been a grey wig. She seems to be one of those angular women who can make themselves look older easily. She claimed to have left because he "hit" her--but they seem to pummel each other periodically. I think the idea was that she was mad about the money he lent to Younger Grandpa Duk-jin and used a fight as an excuse to visit her family. Also, do you notice how Gr. Duk-bae creeps around her, not letting anyone tell her about the apartment fiasco, and giving Duk-jin the suit money behind her back, and how Duk-jin has to sneak the suit into the house? Their relationship seems to balance out, to me. She regards his airs with a certain amount of affection and tolerance while going on with her life the way she wants to, and he gets to feel like a big man with his dim little wife at his side. Bo

He's probably cranky all the time because of his age.* As we get farther along into the show I think we'll see some answers to these questions, though.
p.s. I still think he married her because she was hot when she was young. Before maybe hot + naive=attractive, submissive wife, now it means a semi-senile wife who sometimes bursts.
*and this isn't age discrimination either, it's the truth. My grandma is a lot crankier now than when I first met her. Now, we can't really laugh around her because she gets really angry. She's in her late 80s.

But wait, I don't remember exactly who Lady Jung was. If she was a character who mostly appeared early in the show, I probably missed her, since I only came along about the time JG's mentor died. (I missed all the good food stuff. ) But she does look familiar. I don't remember an Alzheimer's granny in Green Prairie. The obligatory troublesome elder in that show was Yon-ho's grandpa, who stole the money. Maybe you mean another show? My cousin was in town a couple of weeks ago and watched the show with me. I loved explaining everything to her, and she was shocked at the nickname "Chicken Eyes"; she thought it was cruel coming from a culture that was so polite, and I reassured her that most everyone on the show thought it was rude, too. Her comments were, first, that she thought Grandma looked fake-old, that she loves the girls, that Hyun-sik is cute, and that Elder Grandpa is, too. Pretty much what we all think! She lives in NJ, but I don't know if they get the Korean soaps there. It never occurred to me to check for her.

Oh, Lucy, it's too bad if you missed Lady Jung! She was Lady Han's mentor (as Lady Han was J-G's). She was the one from whom they got all that "food has to be good for the body and used for nothing else" stuff. She also was the beloved mentor of that girl who ended up as the king's concubine, and that's who that girl was praying to all the time to protect J-G. The Chois got rid of her by pretending she had a contagious disease and removing her from the palace; then they poisoned her, too. She was dangerous to them because she was a favorite of the King and absolutely incorruptible. Very wise, intelligent, savvy character, nothing like this woman.
As for Green Prairie, do you remember the time the main character, the car salesman with the doctor wife, was late to an important meeting with the big boss because he assisted an elderly lady who was lost from her family home? Then it turned out that the lady was the addled mother of the big boss? Then, the salesman would visit that family occasionally and talk with her and take walks with her on his back.
I know we have viewers in New Jersey; they participate in the YSS board. If you go over there and ask for info, I'm sure they'll be kind enough to give it to you.
