How's the quality of translation in English? I found so many errors in Dae Jang Geum ... and I'm afraid of buying DVD with caption.... How could a person translate a pepper as a 'penis'? ...

signalhunt, when I was watching the broadcast of the series I thought the subtitles were excellent. Other viewers might disagree with that, and since I don’t speak any Korean I can’t evaluate them as well as Korean speakers can. But I thought they were remarkably good, especially when you consider that this wasn’t just a one-time movie release but a 104-hour series. That’s a lot of material to be translated in a short time, and it’s not exactly small-talk stuff either—the historical and military content certainly must have been tougher to translate than the content of a contemporary series. There were occasional odd words and spelling errors here and there, but nothing that bothered me in the least. I had no problem understanding what was going on at any point in the series.
Where I did find some poor subtitles was in the edited-down two-volume set that KBS put together (the 33-episode version). Different subtitles were prepared for that version and they were nowhere near as good as the full-series subtitles. Not even close. Lots of problems there. So don’t buy that set; get the full set.
Welcome to the forum, by the way.

signalhunt, YIKES!!! There are not any extreme misspellings or bizarre errors in translation in the full set.

Lol, yeah Tinky... you'd better think twice before using any of those words in conversation with a Korean if you know what I'm saying.

signalhunt, where did you see that mistranslation on DJG? Was it the official Yesasia set? I know Michael Han's translation, which was used in Chicago, did not have any such problems, and I thought the "official" set had used his translation, but maybe not. Which set were you watching?

But that could mean penis ... depends on the phrase. Like "snake", It could mean something else then the one that crawls right?!

Regarding the set of IYSS available at H-mart in Niles, did anyone pick that one up? Someone I know got them there and it's an 11-disk set. This seems impossible to me. Anyone have this?

That has to be the condensed version. The whole series is over 100 episodes with 2 shows on each DVD.

Yeah, Tinkerbell, I know, I was the mod. LOL. I did not even know there was a "condensed version" available. Do you have the full set? I heard that even the full set contained a condensed version of the first four episodes. Is that true?

Yes Bo, I have the full set and no the first 4 episodes are not" condensed". It's the same show that was aired on TV.
PS, Sorry, I don't know how I missed your post. It had to be all those days I was having trouble with the board.I clicked on here because the home page was saying the last posting for Yi Soon Shin was Aug. 2005!
