Hi I started watching Korean historical drama's around 2 years ago.....After channel surfing past it many times I finally decided to watch an episode...That was it I was hooked..... I watch on WYBE TV out of Philadelphia.....I came in at about the 90th episode of AOW so I missed an awful lot...I hope it comes on again.....Anyway, I just finished recently with IYSS and was sick to see it end......In its place came Seoul 1945.....After an episode or two I was becoming bored....It was then I realized what I really like is the ancient history.....The sword fights, body armour, battle scenes and most of all the magnificent uniforms of both the korean and Japanese admirals, generals and so forth.... I stopped watching and found myself getting quite disturbed because I had nothing to watch.....I forced myself back to Seoul 1945 and am now starting to get into it.... I have a couple of questions....I would like to knowif the korean navy was as advanced as the navy's of England and France....Did YSS ever have contact with them or even a battle or two. Secondly in Seoul 1945 it seems the Japanese are running the big factorys and using the Koreans as labor.....and treating them very poorly...Since they are in Korea should'nt that be the other way aound.....And did the Koreans and japanese always hate each other... This last question is off the subjext, but does anyone know where I can my name translated in korean script....
The Japanese occupied Korea from 1910 until defeated in 1945. They made people take Japanese names, speak Japanese, cut down their Rose of Sharon/hibiscus trees that are the national symbol, in general, oppressed the hell out of them. Laborers were conscripted to work in factories in Japan, too, and girls and women were used as "comfort women." I read Linda Sue Park's book, When My Name Was Keoko, and was horrified. Have you heard the news stories about Korea's cultural treasures that Japan is just now returning, after stealing them during the occupation? grrr. It isn't an equal dislike, IMHO.
I'm not watching Seoul 1945 - Does it begin in 1945 or are those factory scenes flashbacks?
ginnycat5,Koreans are still being mistreated by japan today. Japan claims korean islands with oil on it,as theirs. Koreans living in japan, must hide their korean names. Otherwise they face discrimination and persecution. When they wed a japanese person, they are not allowed to inherit land or any assets. They can never be promoted. Because foreigners are not considered as knowledgable as japanese people. Sony is the only company so far,as to hire a foreigner as a top official.
------------------- 1945 does take place in that time zone. But there is not much fighting. Plus it has a feeling of a modern day Korean drama with politics laced within it. I got bored watching it.
In Japan, it is almost impossible to become a citizen. You can try marrying a Japanese, heck, you can even be the fourth generation and still be denied Japanese citizenship.
I agree, historical dramas that dates to at least 200 years before are so much better. Seoul 1945 has too much romance and not enough history and political stuff to be call a "historical" drama. The only part I like was when Korea got liberated, but it too, got boring after a while. (In my area, we broadcasted Seoul 1945 almost immediately after YSS)
If Koreans have such a hard time living in Japan, why do they keep going there??? There are 192 other countries in ther world to choose from...
The koreans in Japan have been living there for centuries so they can't just pack up and leave, most Koreans came to Japan during the Imjin war and during the korean occupation by Japan in the late 19th century. Its not only Koreans that suffer the blunt discrimination in Japan, its everyone that is not Japanese. However, Japan is not the only country in the far east that practice such discrimination, Korea and China both have issues with foreigners and immigration because they're a homogeneous country like Japan.
On topic, I'm pretty sure that the European Navy was far superior to the Korean Navy at the time. Remember that it was YSS strategic plans that provided the victories of the Korean Navy and not the navy itself. Look how Won Kyun disastrous attempt almost destroyed the entire organization, it was really YSS command rather than the Navy pure weaponry that defeated the Japanese invasion.
The sad thing is that many of the Koreans and Chinese in Japan were forced to go there during Japanese occupation for hard labor. The descendants mostly believe themselves to be Japanese, and not their original race. However, that is not enough to persuade Japan.

Hi, Skinz. Glad to see you again.
About comparision between European and Korean navy, the result of battle would be depend on various factors, such as the competence of commander (as you remarked), strategy and tactics, geography (battlefield), weather, weapons etc.
The Chosun Navy with YSS : 300 percents power up. The Chosun Navy with Won Kyun : 500 percents power down.
