I caught only the last 60 episodes or so, and I was wondering, who is the guy in black who's always following Yi Soon Shin? You know...the one who commands and trains the Secret Squad? I've never heard or caught his name.
And who's the actor who plays him?

That's my boyfriend, Lee Han Garl (just kidding of course!). He is Yi Soon Shin's personal bodyguard, Nalbal. A fictitious character. The back story on him was that he was the son of a potter in the village where Yi Soon Shin began his training under a sage Master of martial arts. The villagers suffered under both heavy taxation by the government and raids via the Japanese. The little boy Nalbal became orphaned and the show implies that Yi Soon Shin took him under wing. Nalbal grows up and dedicates his life to the protection of Yi Soon Shin.

Hey, thanks for the background information, Teresa. I didn't see that part of the series, so I was under the impression that he was the Admiral's real son. I hope you enjoyed the ending of the series, and based on your apparent admiration of this character, you really need not miss the special episodes.

Nalbal was a fascinating character. When he was a child, YSS taught him how to shoot arrows and to fight. I think that was after his parents died, but it may have been before. (Theresa, are you sure his father was a potter? Actually, now that I think of it, everyone in that village was a potter, weren't they.) Anywho, Nalbal was left behind while a child with the other potter guy at the temple, and presumably raised by him. (YSS could not take him on his dangerous journey.) So one day, YSS is set upon in the woods by one of his many many many enemies, and a mysterious young man in black comes to his rescue. Who turns out to be Nalbal.

Bo's correct, Nalbal was not raised by Yi Soon Shin. I was recollecting the charming scene(s) where Yi Soon Shin and Mijn (can't remember how to spell her name) were a comfort to the young boy and the other ones where YSS was giving him some small instructions in fighting. I think it was after his parents died, Bo.
Heavy sigh, Captain V. After looking over WYBE's schedule listing, it appears we will not get to see the IYSS specials. We'll just be going right into the series "Seoul 1945." However, I'm going to hold out the hope that they will air them this Thursday and Friday anyway. Sometimes their listing doesn't jive with what is actually aired!

Thank you Skinz (and Choko!) those clips were enjoyable. I had to laugh on the "groupies" one, envisioning myself as one of them. It's a darn good thing I never had the opportunity, because I'm certain I'd quite poorly represent the Yanks...
(Teresa hypothetically meets IYSS cast): "Ummm, Hi! Ummm, I...like...show...ummm... ahhh...the swords are very...ummm...shiney....KAMSAMNEEDA*!!"
*I would, of course, say this with a tinge of a Philadelphia accent and butcher my scant Korean language so badly as to render it unintelligble.
(IYSS cast member): bows graciously to gawking Yankee and takes fluffy heart pillow

Okay, I've held my silence long enough.....Am I truly, the only one here that is wondering how Johnny Cash, " The Man in Black", winds up being referenced in a thread concerning The Immortal Yi Soon Shin? Yes, I'm very bored and I enjoy amusing myself for no apparent reason.

*giggle* Captain, the similarities between Johnny Cash and Nalbal are undeniable: they both wear black, they carry their "weaponry" slung across their backs, they "Walked the Line" and went through the "Ring of Fire," they both have the letters "N" and "A" in their names, and the list goes on and on!

As usual, Skinz and Choko demonstrate their immeasurable value to this community of enthusiasts.
Props to you my friends!

I think we all had that little "man in black" re Johnny Cash thing percolating in our brains, Captain. I like your analysis Teresa--it reminds me of those silly "similarities between Kennedy and Lincoln assassinations" lists--only your list HAS REAL STUFF ON IT. LOL.

Bo, as you know, the Philadelphia faction is finished with the IYSS series -- now we join you Chicagoans in waiting for the DVD (at a low, low price!) box set! Thanks for being a swell moderator and putting up with this Philly interloper!
