I couldn't agree more bungalowdweller! I think that YSS is more attractive now with a little gray in his beard than he was at the start of the show. Maturity is very attractive. I'm not a fan of Young-Nam's bushy eyebrows but it occurred to me that they do make him look older and I think that's what the show's directors were going for;he does look too young otherwise. well, historically yi young nam was in his early thirties.

I was a bit disappointed at the lack of on-screen amour on IYSS ... sure, there were the running jokes about Nalbal and YSS ;D but they could have given Yi Young-nam even a few moments of chaste romance before his tragic, violent death. I guess it was assumed that most of the male characters had off-screen families. Or maybe it's just a convention of the genre. While watching "Taegukgi" I was quite surprised when the camera cut to a different angle during the screen kiss between Jang Dong-gun and Lee Eun-joo ... with all that gore, violence and profanity, they wouldn't even show a simple kiss.

I think that most of the men were married, Daemado. They would certainly discuss it occasionally. There was a hint of a romance between Yi Young-nam and the courtesan, wasn't there, but that was never really, er, consummated.
Wait, wait...I'm being psychically scolded by an elderly ajumma right now for using dirty words... Aigu! Aigu!
(LOL)

I guess it was assumed that most of the male characters had off-screen families. We saw some family members of IYSS characters in the drama even though they passed only with a few minutes or a few seconds. Captain Chung's father, Won Kyun's mom, Kwon Jun's wife, Mijin's parents... I chuckled every time when I imaged how Na Dae-Yong's father was. Lt. Na and his slave soldier told about his father. Lt. Na in the drama must have been a naughty boy ! Several months ago, I found the fact that Yu Sung-Ryong's first wife died just before the Imjin War. I forget the exact date. It was certainly between 1591 and early 1592. (I guess you can find the info in the biographic note of Chingbirok. I don't know where I put the book. LOL) I don't know when he got married again. Perhaps during the inter war period.

KBS-LA cut quite a bit from each episode to make room for more Herbal Brite, Dental Miracle and Bacchus commercials, so I guess I missed some references to off-screen families. We did get a glimpse of Kwon Jun's household, and Uh Young-dam and YSS had their families, but the rest of the Left Cholla Navy spouses were even less visible than Norm's wife Vera from "Cheers." Certainly Yi Young-nam (a.k.a. the "handsome buck") would have been considered a prime marriage prospect. He had some real chemistry with Chunghyang, but I'm sure that romance between an official and a kisaeng would have been considered scandalous at the time. Still they could have found a suitable match for her somewhere. Jin was probably too feisty and independent for domesticity, though. And then there was Na Dae-yong, a.k.a. "the ADD guy." I'd guess he was more of a bumbling misfit than a naughty little boy, at least until YSS found an appropriate outlet for his wandering mind.
