The Korea National Tourism Organization is having a special dinner with door prizes. Of course it is a discussion abouaat the "new phase of promotional tools for travel to Korea" and Gangwon-do Province, where some scenes of Winter Sonata were filmed. There will be some Korean traditional music peformances. The will be an American and Korean mixed buffet style and door prizes such as Winter Sonata DVD's and Cound track CD's, a Polaris necklace, Winter Sonata posters, etc. It will be held on May 5, Thursday from 7-9pm at the Sheraton Suites in Elk Grove. According to the flyer I got, there is no charge!

LOL! I called and was told that it is mainly being advertised to a Japanese audience. But I didnt' let that stop me and RSVPd anyway. Now, I'm biting my nails. I have to figure out how much cab fare that would be and if it is outrageous then I'm going to have to get on the expressway. If you don't hear from me for a couple of days assume the worst.

Wow! Tell us how it is! Have fun. Can you take digital pictures? I admire your dedication to go all the way out there. I have a really old digital camera (like when they were first coming out) that I could borrow, so I have to see if it even works. Then I have to go beg someone to upload the pictures for me, but I'll try. Otherwise I'll just scan photos the old fashioned way. I hope it's worth it.

Need a date? I don't mind driving on the expressway. Hey, you can’t beat the price (free) and I doubt that many people are going to show up anyway so why let all that good Korean food go to waste? I found out that if I take the blue line train to O’Hare and then catch a pace bus I can get there in about an hour. That’s not bad. I think I’m taking that route instead. You are more than welcome to meet up with us (my brother is going) and we can share a table (assuming they have a sit down dinner). And while I am thinking about it, here is my complaint. Okay, I understand that it is aimed toward a Japanese audience. However, if KNTO already knows that their is a large audience of what they label as "caucasian" viewers, why don't they offer us these kind of events? The Japanese from Japan are the ones who are head over heels for Yon-sama. I don't know how to explain it, except that time after time again, they always pass us up.

I wish we knew about this sooner and could have gone, because it's not far from home! We enjoyed Winter Love Song, but wanted a happier ending for poor Joonsang. My father-in-law is being moved from the hospital to a rehab center this afternoon, so we couldn't have made it there. My wife got the call today, so she had to scramble and get over there to get some of his things over to him. It's been a worrisome and tiring 6 weeks, so we hope he'll improve over there and bounce back from his strokes.

Aigu! That sums up my experience at this event. First of all, I'll limit myself to say that the commute to the Sheraton hotel was horrible! I forgot my camera and had to buy a $15 dollar one at the gift shop. I got there 1/2 hour late despite running around like a mad woman. Well, I get there and this lady asks me if I've made a reservation. I say yes I have, then she says she is so sorry but that their banquet room is full to maximum capacity. She hands me a bag with goodies and expects me to be on my way. Well galacticchick is nothing if not feisty when she travels over 30 miles to be at an event and then is expected to be turned away at the door. I tell her that it is fine, but ask her what time the traditional music presentation will start, she kind of gave me this look of "What, you still want to stay?" but tells me that around 8:10 is when their slide presentation will start. She was the only semi-mean person there. Then there was a slide presentation about the different locations where dramas were shot, mainly focusing on dramas or movies that Yon-sama has been in, good thing this part was in english (the woman making the presentation was Korean so I guess she didn't speak any Japanese). There were 4 women with red and white hanbok who played traditional instruments and this was really cool. It only lasted about 20-25 minutes but they played really well. After that there was a question and answer section (in Japanese) about the slide presentation. After that they held the drawing for the door prizes (the best prize was a 14k gold Polaris necklace) and the same two tables kept winning everything (including one of the sponsors) so I still say the thing was rigged. After that the whole thing was over and everybody just left. Well I thanked a girl named Jinny who so nicely found us some seats so we could enjoy the slide & music presentation and asked if I could take a picture of her hanbok. She asked me "How do you know about hanbok?" then I told her I belonged to the Korean Drama Fan Club and she ran and got me a cute little Polaris cell phone charm. She was nice. Hooray for Jinny! Then I met someone else from Korea Times newspaper and she told me to call her if I ever had any questions about Korea. She was nice too, her name is Jung Song--hooray for her as well. It was a nice experience but dang, I got home almost at 12 p.m. and I didn't eat dinner until I got home!

Hi, Galacticchick! Good for you for going! It sounds like it was sort of worth it. Did your brother go? How irritating and disappointing that the same people won most of the prizes; that's just not fair. I was involved in a contest that was rigged a couple of years ago (like 5 or 6) and it STILL bothers me. [Actually, it wasn't technically rigged; it was at my friend's store, one of those things where you fill out your information and put a slip in a container. Well, the company sponsoring the "contest" decided just to be "nice" and give the prize to one of my friend's employees instead of actually drawing a name from the entries. So they got all those peoples' contact information with no benefit to the people.] I've met Jinny; she's from the KNTO. How nice of her to give you the cellphone charm. Did you have the Polaris necklace already? I have the $14 cheapie from YesAsia and like it a lot, but that 14K one sounds nice. I'm sorry you didn't get anything to eat. I am mightily impressed that you did NOT take no for an answer and got to see some Korean culture. Kudos to you, you determined and dedicated K-drama fan. You win Fan of the Month. (Like Employee of the Month.) Lucy P.S. What was in the goodie bag??

You know, this is true. They seem to have a real blind spot about us. Like, they're apparently excited when they're reminded we exist--"Oh, you like Korean drama! "--but don't care to do anything with us. Are they just taking us for granted, or do they feel more potential in other markets? I wonder. I mean, they don't HAVE to do anything, but it is a little weird to me that they don't.
