One of the memories that Yujin wanted Joonsang to remember was the nickname of their old teacher, he of the gruff exterior and the warm heart--Gagamel. Usually a nickname is based on the person's real name or describes a characteristic of the person. Anybody know what Teacher's nickname means? I tried a Google and came up with a lot of references, most of them on German websites and one Korean website. Sounds to me like the name of an ogre in one of the Grimms' fairy tales!

Interesting! I had heard the name "Gargamel" before but didn't know what it was, and their calling him "Gagamel" made me think of that. I wonder if they mean the same character or if I was hearing it wrong to begin with. If Gagamel is an ogre, that would make sense, because he was pretty hard on those kids, within reason, of course.

I thought so too... Whenever, I hear "Gargamel" I keep hearing that Shubert piece in my mind. Well, korea did show american cartoons back then (early to middle 90's WLS's story setting) so its not too far-off to think they got it from the Smurfs. I remember seeing Knight Rider then but dubbed in Korean of course!

I guess the right alphabet spelling is Gargamel. (Also remember his cat Azrael?)
I bet the students gave him that name because he looks like ready to gobble them up for lunch. (Smurfs are the students..!They run when he shows up ;D)
He's got big head and his bark seems worse than his bite, the kind of teacher you'd like to avoid when you're the student but be most delighted once you see him after the graduation.

Thanks for steering me to the Smurfs. As someone who grew up way before the Smurfs (like the 50's--I remember the Korean war vividly), I had no idea, but I think Alanna put it in the right perspective. I asked Jeeves (ask.com) last night, and was directed to the following: 1. A punk rock band. 2. A Korean electronics manufacturer. 3. A self-described "deviant" artist ( ). 4. The owner of Pokemon Land, a web site in Korean and English. 5. A Smurf character. I vote for No. 5.

I couldn't have described him better FROM BO - fixed your quote, moreshige. You dropped one of the "]" marks.

Oh, hah! That name generator is funny. I came up as "Erotic Smurf." (No, really.) My sister, the elegant one, was "Nascar Smurf." (Hee, hee) And my OTHER sister, the evil one, was "Igneous Smurf." (double hee hee)
I wonder how it works.
Bo
PS - Bob my Bob was "As-Seen-on-TV Smurf." How did it know?

Interesting. I remember similar name switcher that changes one's name into Hobbit's name some time ago when the Lord of the Ring was first released.
I got two kinds; My real Korean name came out with ; Full Monty Smurf
My ID with Kim as a last name came out with; You Go Smurf
All very nice~

My Smurf name was "Groupie Smurf"!! That certainly is fitting. I've been a "groupie" (informal only, no following or unsavory behavior) of many people over the years.
