Admiral Yi was, without a doubt, a great swordsman who trained endlessly for hours on end since he was a boy.
In a sword duel, who do you think would win?
YSS vs Wakizaka?
YSS vs Konishi?
YSS vs Won Kyun?
YSS vs Hideyoshi?
YSS vs Yi Yong Nam?
I have ful confidence he would have won all of these. But it'd be interesting to see what you guys think.

Are we judging from real history or from the drama?

Yi Soo Shin did not begin his training until after he got married at 18 and influenced by his father in law to pursue a military career. Even then YSS's skilled sucked and he failed the exam twice.
Wakizaka
A scholar VS A Merchant, an interesting match.
Won Kyun in 5 seconds.
Hideyoshi
Yi Yong Nam was 25 years younger than YSS.

Wow you are pretty anti-Yi Soon Shin.
Everyone who knows about the Admiral knows about his great swordmanship and how he practiced it extremely hard.
You are also extremely pro-Japanese, saying Hideyoshi and Wakizaka would both win without giving me any proof.
Yi Soon Shin was good at sword fighting whether you like it or not.
Yi Soon shin beat Gurujima in a duel. Gurujima was a deadly Japanese pirate from before the imjin war.
Get your facts straight.

YSS vs. Hideyoshi?
Here I would vote for YSS. Hideyoshi was born a peasant so he wasn't trained in military skills in his early years. Physically, Hideyoshi was a small and skinny individual who was more powerful with manipulation and obtaining people trust than swordsmanship.
YSS vs. Yi Young Nam?
Vote goes to YSS also. Just because Young Nam was younger doesn't mean he would've automatically win. YSS had more experience and knowledge than Young Nam.
YSS vs. Won Kyun?
I don't know about this one. I don't know enough about Won Kyun past but they both were trained officers so I wouldn't expect it to be a short battle.
YSS vs. Wakizaka?
Here I vote Wakizaka. Wakizaka had more battle experience during the Civil war in Japan at the time, while YSS was either training or patrolling the northern borders. Wakizaka saw more action than YSS did so he would've been more prepared for such a duel.
YSS vs. Konishi?
YSS would've win. Konishi was a merchant before a trained samurai so I don't believe he excelled at swordmanship.
Trespasser does make a good point about YSS failing the test twice, but it also show that he had heart by trying again.

See, this is the problem with confusing a drama for actual history. Kurujima Michihusa was blown away by a canon fire and one of YSS's lieutenant, who was Japanese, identified his dead body floating in water. YSS's men fished Michihusa out of water and hung his head over a mast to demoralize Japanese troops.

you take the drama too literally navalpower but I'm glad you admire Yi.
twice? I thought he only failed once because he fell off his horse (I'm not gonna go on about the famous story afterwards).

And he did kill Wakizaka's brother and injure Wakizaka but then got outnumbered.

Trespasser, just because Yi Soon Shin failed the military exam in his YOUTH DAYS doesn't mean he sucks for the rest of his life, you know. A lot of brilliant people suck in their youth days, but get better later on. Take Einstein, that is irrefutable evidence.

And he did kill Wakizaka's brother and injure Wakizaka but then got outnumbered. The drama series is not a good source to get your accurate historical facts. You wanted a opinion on a topic you created from historical facts, not from the drama, and your clearly making your assessment from the drama series, this is not a good way to start off.

I'm sure that the Admiral's swordmanship was good-I think that his men would not have respected him as much had it not been- and I certainly would like to think that he would have won all these matches (yes, I'm biased in favor of the Admiral, I admit it!) But his skill at arms (or lack therof) is not the reason why he was a hero. It was his ability to be a free thinker, to perceive what could be done and do it, to find solutions that no one else could find, these are the reasons why he is remembered and admired.
With that said...
YSS vs. Hideyoshi-This one goes to the Admiral, but I think I'd rather see them play chess than fight, and in that kind of contest the Admiral would win, hands down, in like, three moves. ;D
YSS vs. Yi Young Nam- I cry foul on this one, I don't even want to imagine them fighting.
YSS vs. Konishi- The Admiral, because I think that the life he led was more phisically demanding than Konishi's lifestyle as a merchant/trader.
YSS vs. Won Kyun-Ummmm, are we talking Won Kyun sober? Even if he was, I'd still give the edge to the Admiral, as a guy too overweight to even run away effectively can't be much of a fighter.
YSS vs Wakizaka-I...have to...say...that Wakizaka...would probably win.(Whew, that was hard to say!) because he would have undoubtedly been training since childhood, while YSS began his life(from my understanding) on track to be a scholar/ government official and, as mentioned in an earlier post, didn't start his military training until he was an adult.

Is there any historic evidence of Yi clashing with a Samauri?

A lot of people seem to think that samurai were automatically these awesome, fiersome sword wielders. Many were but people also assume they can beat anyone. No one ever realizes that there were and are also countless numbers of very talented Korean and Chinese swordsmen. Koreans are more known for their archery skills but they also possessed and possess great swordmanship.
Nalbal and YSS could've taken down any samurai in their time.
