Florel, how do you obtain all this incredible information? I had no idea that so much was known about what seem to be relatively obscure people by today's standards. Chances are I wouldn't understand anything since I can't understand a word of Korean. Keep up the good work!
I received some basic and a little bit professional educations about Korean history when I was in Korea. But I've forgotten many details during ten years. The Korean websites helped me to study Korean history again. But sometimes they gave contradictory or inaccurate infos and there are ongoing historical debates. So I need to "criticize" and "cross-verify" the infos I obtained on web.
If one can read Korean, it's possible to collect a big amount of informations concerning Korean history and the Imjin War on korean web sites. Several of them offer useful infos and some diligent Korean internautes even posted some excerpts of translations of the Royal Chronicles and other primary sources.
About biographies of historical personages, I often refer to Korean Study (
han guk hak) sites. About the navy officers, YSS's Diary is the source
par excellence.
Thanks for inspiriting me, captain. I also wish contributions on the part of Korean members or guests. I only have limited infos because I cannot get history books written in Korean where I'm living while Koreans in Korea certainly know much better than me on historical subjects.
Having said that, can you explain the difference between the positions of Yi Won-Ik and Kwon Yul? According to your other post, it seems that Yi Won-Ik was the supreme military commander while Kwon Yul was only a marshal. What did Yi Won-Ik do in order to receive such a promotion?
After all, he did lead the failed second attack on Pyongyang while Kwon Yul defended Haenju and Ichi among other things.
I think there is a translation problem as Daemado pointed it out in another thread.
When I translated the title
chechalsa as Supreme Military Commander, I followed the translation in the English version of YSS's Diary. But, IMO, it's not a good translation.
Chechalsa aka
dochechalsa is a kind of administrative inspector about military affairs. (perhaps equivalent to the role of Ishida Mitsunari in Chosun.) We could translate it as Grand Inspector or as Supreme Provincial Commander.
Sometimes a marshal came to be appointed
chechalsa at the same time. But during the Imjin War period, the title of
chechalsa was taken by the Prime Minister, Left Minister or Right Minister (ex: Yu Sung-Ryong, Yun Du-Su, Yi Won-Ik, Yi Duk-Hyung). So their rank was above
dowonsu (Marshal) who was a chief military commander
in field.
Yi Won-Ik was not the only one who failed to recover a fortress. Kim Myun was a brilliant commander, but he failed three times to recover Sungju. Marshal Kwon Yul (with the Ming commander Yang Hao) also failed to recover Ulsan Castle in 1597-1598.
In fact, Yi Won-Ik is more famous as a great minister than a military leader. There were four great ministers under the reigns of King Sunjo and Prince Gwanghae : Yu Sung-Ryong, Yi Won-Ik, Yi Duk-Hyung and Yi Hang-Bok. And all of them show up in the drama.
In IYSS, the Chosunse ministers except Yu Sung-Ryong are depicted as a crowd of stupid rats. It's true that they were responsible for bad national defense. But, on the other hand, they worked hard to overcome the national crisis in administrative or diplomatic fields. All of the Chosunese ministers were not corrupt fat rats like Yun Won-Hyung or Yun Du-Su.
