but some critics say that Won Kyun was described as a brave manly warrior while Yi Sun-shin is a introspective scholar (that is "girly") character. Interesting difference in opinion. Hmmm... Oops, I made a mistake. Not girly but "girlish"

Choko, I read your posting in another thread about Mr. Kim's novel. It would be interesting to read his books if I could get them. Anyway, it seems that, in South Korea, Mr. Kim Tak-Hwan is (falsely or correctly) considered as a "partisan" of Won Kyun. I cannot judge him because I never read his book. But I have an impression that sometimes he is unjustly accused. For example, I heard he didn't sink the Turtle ship in his novel, but when Korean spectators viewed the Turtle ship sinking episode, they reproached Mr. Kim. It's not fair. BTW, who is the girlish boy in your new banner ? He is gorgeous !

Navy Commanders in September 1597 (at the moment of the Battle of Myungryang)Yi Soon-Shin (Supreme Navy Commander of three provinces and Commander of the Left Cholla Navy) Kim Ok-Chu (Commander of the Right Cholla Navy) - Participated in the Battle of Myungryang. But this new Right Commander of Cholla Navy didn't satisfy the Supreme Commander YSS. Commander Kim received very low estimation from YSS who wrote in his Diary that... "... The Commander of the Cholla Right Naval Station arrived, leading his ships. I was astonished at the poor crews and equipment." (26 August 1597) "... Kim Ok-Chu, Commander of the Cholla Right Naval Station, is only qualified as a captain and is not worthy to be a Navy Commander, yet he was commissioned as Commander by the favor of Kim Ung-nam, Left State Councilor in the royal court. ..." (8 September 1597) Bae Seol (Commander of the Right Kyungsang Navy) - Deserted from the navy camp before the Battle of Myungryang. Yi Woon-Ryong (Commander of the Left Kyungsang Navy) - At this moment, he was in Left Kyungsang province, perhaps near Ulsan, and taking military operations on land. Kwon Jun (Commander of the Chungchong Navy) - In real history, Admiral Kwon didn't participate in the Battle of Myungryang. It seems that he stayed in his jurisdictional area (in Chungchong province) by the order of the court. Cf. It's not certain that Yi Young-Nam would have participated in the Battle of Myungryang. ------------------------------------------------- * Poor Admiral YSS ! He fought almost alone in the Battle of Myungryang ! One navy commander, the only one who stayed or who could stay beside him, was seized with fear, and other captains were also fearful before the outnumbered enemy. "... The Flagship dashed alone into the midst of the fleet of the advancing enemy ... but all the other ships only looked at this fray and did not move forward, even though their Admiral on the Flagships was in danger. ... I looked around for our ships, but they had already fallen astern about a li and the ship on which Kim Ok-Chu [Commander of the Right Cholla Navy] rode had dropped far behind, hovering on the horizon. ... " (16 September 1597) In the second version of his Diary, "... Our ships' Captains lost their fighting morale at the sight of the enemy's overwhelming strength of numbers and used various devices to fall out from the line of battle. In particular, the ships of Kim Ok-Chu, Commander of the Right Cholla Naval Station, had already fallen away to a distance of over one mile. ... " (16 September 1597)

Wow. Our good admiral fought so bravely against them Is it true that he whipped off a sailor's head who was retreating to galvanize his troops?

Is it true that he whipped off a sailor's head who was retreating to galvanize his troops? No, YSS didn't kill his man during the battle. The famous episode in Myungryang Battle is the Admiral's words to Ahn Wui, Magistrate of Koje. According to his Diary... < ... Standing on the bridge of my Flagship, I roared, "An Wui ! Do you wish to die at my order ? An Wui, do you wish to die under martial law ? If you escape, where can you find a place to live ?" Then Ahn Wui, inspired, plunged into the line of battle. ... > ( Nanjung Ilgi, 2nd version, 16 September 1597). Ahn Wui became Commander of the Right Cholla Navy in 1598.

Ahn Wui (1563 - after 1636) Native of Kimje, Cholla province, Ahn Wui had a hard time just before the Imjin War. In 1589, he was exiled in Pyung-an province after being involved in Chung Yeo-Rip's Treason Affair (- Episodes 36-37), because he was a relative of Chung (more exactly, a son of Chung's female cousin). He was released from the exile after the Imjin War broke out in 1592 and passed the Military Examination. In 1593, he was appointed Magistrate of Koje by recommendation of Yi Hang-Bok, the Minister of War and the son-in-law of Marshal Kwon Yul. (So Ahn Wui already knew YSS from 1593.) In 1594, participated in the 2nd Battle of Danghangpo ( - Ep. 81) as a vanguard commander. On the contrary of his depiction in the drama, he was a brave warrior in real history. According to the Admiral YSS's memorial to the court sent in January 1597, Ahn Wui sneaked into Busan, the HQ of the Japanese, only with two soldiers and set fire to a powder magazine. (So he was a Young-Nam-type-character in real history. ) Participated in the Battle of Chilchonryang in July 1597 ( - Ep. 91-92). This brave man, like other captains, was also seized with fear in front of more than 300 enemy vessels in the Battle of Myungryang in September 1597 ( - Ep. 95-96). But he ran first to the side of the Flagship when YSS called their captains. After being scolded by the Admiral, he was inspired and sank two Japanese vessels. Thanks to the Chosun navy's victory in Myungryang, Ahn Wui was promoted to the honorific 3rd High Rank Tongjongdaebu in November 1597 and he became Commander of the Right Cholla Navy in 1598. (So probably participated in the Battles of Jeol-yi Island (aka Jolido), of Waekyo and of Noryang even though his biographic notes don't mention it.) After the end of the Imjin War, he was appointed Commander of Cholla Army (1601), Commander of the Left Cholla Navy (1603), Commander of the Chungchong Navy (1605), Commander of the Left Kyungsang Navy (1606). But his life in the military career was not easy because he was often impeached by Inspector ministers and fired for various reasons, behind of which there was a political reason : the fact that he was a nephew of Chung Yeo-Rip. During the reign of Prince Gwang-hae, he became Police Superintendent and then Defense Commander of Pyung-an province. He lived until the reign of King Injo (1624-1649) and died after 1636. Ahn Wui mentioned in YSS's Diary after the Battle of Chilchonryang : <... After lunch I arrived in Noryang, there I saw An Wi [=Ahn Wui], the Magistrate of Koje (Island), Cho Kye-Chong [=Jo Gye-Jong] of Yongdungpo and a score of people ; they rushed to me, crying loudly, and many sailors, soldiers and civilian refugees who had escaped from the scene of the tragic defeat also cried for joy at seeing me, but Pae Sol [=Bae Seol], Commander of the Kyongsang Navy did not appear, for he had run away. Staff Captain [of the Right Kyungsang Navy] Yi Ui-Tuk [=Yi Ui-Deuk] came to see me, so I asked him about the circumstances of the defeat. Then all the people present answered between sobs, "Commanding Admiral Won Kyun hardly saw the enemy before he ran away to land first, followed by other Commanders and chef officers, deserting their ships and crews. Hence the tragedy." The grave fault of the Commanding Admiral is beyond human description. They wished to crush up his bones and slice up his flesh. I passed that night on board of the ship "Koje" [Ahn Wui's ship] and had a long talk with the Magistrate of Koje [Ahn Wui] until two o'clock in the morning. As I sat up at night without sleep I suffered from an infection of the eye.> ( Nanjung Ilgi, 21th July 1597).

Hwang Se-Deuk (1537-1598) He was a relative of YSS's wife, more exactly the husband of a cousin of YSS's wife. Born in Jiksan, Chungchong province in 1537. Passed the Military Examination in 1564. When the Imjin War broke out in 1592, he was Constable of Jangheung (the Right Cholla Navy). Appointed Garrison Commander of Sado (the Left Cholla Navy) in 1596. Killed in the Battle of Waekyo on the 2nd October 1598.

Chung Wun (1543-1592) - also spelled as Chung Un, Jung Un or Jeong Wun. He was son of a military officer. Passed the Military Examination in 1570 at the age of 28 (Cf. YSS passed the exam in 1576) and became Lt. of Geumgapdo (the Right Cholla Navy), and then Magistrate of Ungcheon (the Right Kyungsang Navy). In 1591, he was appointed Captain of Nokdo (the Left Cholla Navy ; YSS wrote that his war preparation was the best among his captains) and fought against the Japanese under the command of Admiral YSS. Captain Chung was killed in the Sea Battle of Busan on the 1st September 1592. He was YSS's most trusted captain. His memorial tablet was enshrined in Ssangchungsa on Nokdo Island (actual Goheung County, Cholla province) along with the memorial tablet of Captain Yi Dae-Won*. Ssangchungsa Shrine Related thread about Captain Chung Wun : Episode 78* Yi Dae-Won (1566-1587) - in Ep. 31- He passed the Military Examination in 1583 at the age of 17 and became Captain of Nokdo in 1586 when he was 20 years old. In the following year, on the 10th February 1587, about 20 vessels of the Japanese pirates (Waegu aka Wako), guided by a Korean traitor Sa Hwa Dong, made a raid on Sonjuk Island aka Sondae Island (actual Goheung County), Cholla province (- Ep. 31, The Japanese intrusion of Junghae year). Cf. Related postings in History & fiction thread (page 1 and 2). Captain Yi defeated them and took the enemy chief prisoner. But his superior commander, Shim Am (Commander of the Left Cholla Navy) became jealous of his exploits. When the Japanese pirates made second raid on Sonjuk Island on the 17th February 1587, Captain Yi, outnumbered by the enemy, called for rescue, but Commander Shim let him defeated and killed by the Japanese. When the royal court was informed of Yi Dae-Won's victory of the 10th February from the Governor of Cholla province, the king fired Shim Am and appointed Captain Yi as Commander of the Left Cholla Navy. But he was killed before he could receive the royal decree ordering his promotion. Shim Am was executed on the 4th April 1587. Yi Dae-Won's memorial tablet was enshrined in Ssangchungsa on Nokdo Island. Captain Chung Wun's tablet joined his five years later. In IYSS, Yi Dae-Won showed up in Ep. 31 without a close-up. Aigu. Still chugging away there, are you not, mon amie. Ami. Amiga. We reap the grace of your obsessions. Bo I just would like to finish what I've started, a completed bio note of IYSS navy commanders. ;D Can anyone provide a little more information about Yi Young Nam. He's my daughter's hero and heartthrob. Thanks! Yi Young-Nam (1566-1598) He was Lieutenant of Sobipo (Right Kyungsang Navy) when the Imjin War started in 1592. Commander Won Kyun dispatched him to the Left Cholla Navy several times in order to ask YSS to send relieving forces. ( - Ep. 57-58) He became Magistrate of Tae-an in 1595 ( - mentioned in Ep. 87) and Constable of Jangheung in 1596 ( - Ep. 87-88. The poor boy was always under Won Kyun's command and had to follow him ! ). Fired in June 1597 ( - Ep. 91), so he was not present at the moment of Won Kyun's disastrous defeat in Chilchoryang. Garrison Commander of Garipo in 1598. ( - Ep. 1-4 and Ep. 100-104) Died in the Battle of Noryang. ( - Ep. 4 and Ep. 104) * According to a record of the clan Yi of Yangsung (Yi Young-Nam's clan), his relative Yi Seol (? - 1598) was also a navy officer and died in the Battle of Noryang. Yi Young-Nam in YSS's Diary"... Yi Young-Nam and Yi Yo-Nyom came to report themselves. When I heard from them about the absurdity of Admiral Won Kyun, all I could do was to sigh with deep sorrow. Yi Young-Nam presented a Japanese dagger to me. ..." (2nd March 1593) "Early in the morning Yi Young-Nam's waiting woman [= girl friend] came and said that she had to escape and go somewhere else, because Kwon Suk wished to take her by force. Late in the day Navy Commander Kwon (Jun), the Staff Captain, the Captains of Bangdap and Sado came together. Kwon Suk also came. ..." (7th January 1596) --> Yeah ! Young-Nam had a girl friend ! Yi Young-Nam left the navy camp in the previous year (1595). It seems that YSS summoned Kwon Suk to scold him. "... I became anxious again over the safety of Ul [YSS's second son]. When sitting up with anxiety until late at night, there was a knocking at the door. I opened to see who it was, and Yi Young-Nam was standing before me. I called him in and talked with him about our past experiences." (7th May 1596) "In the morning talked with Yi Young-Nam again and attended office late. ..." (8th May 1596) "Yi Young-Nam departed for his post [in Jangheung]. ..." (12th May 1596)

Thanks, Florel! We just watched the special about the making of YSS and Luce read your post right before going to bed! She was so thrilled that there was so much info about Yi Young-Nam. IYSS is all she spoke about and read about today. She spent a few hours on this thread--just soaking up the pictures and the timelines. She copied several quotations of the Admiral and put them in her bedroom and our classroom. I truly appreciate all of the time and care you craft into each of your replies!
