+ The dates indicated below are Navy Commander's activity dates on their posts.
Navy Commanders during the Imjin War
the Left Kyungsang Navy
- Pak Hong (Early 1592) - Yi Woon-Ryong (1596-1598)*
* Yi Woon-Ryong (1562-1610) was Captain of Okpo of Right Kyungsang Navy when the war broke out. He was a right hand man of YSS and he became Supreme Navy Commander of Three Provinces in 1604. But this important character, already shown up in Episodes 33-35 (Nok dune period), was eliminated from the drama in its futur episodes, because the producers had a contract problem with the actor. They explained they didn't want to multiplify role changements. lol
the Right Kyungsang Navy
- Won Kyun (January 1592 - February 1595) - Bae Seol (February 1595 - June 1595) - Kwon Jun (June 1595 - early 1597 ?) - Bae Seol (1597) - Yi Soon-Shin (homonym, late 1597 - 1598)
the Left Cholla Navy
- Yi Soon-Shin the Immortal (1592 - February 1597)** - Won Kyun (February 1597 - July 1597) - Yi Soon-Shin the Immortal (July 1597 - November 1598)
** In 1593, YSS was appointed Supreme Navy Commander of Three Provinces (Kyungsang, Cholla, Chungchong). When he was jailed in 1597, Won Kyun took his double titles of Supreme Commander and Commander of Left Cholla Navy.
the Right Cholla Navy
- Yi Ok-ki (1591 - July 1597) - Kim Ok-Chu (late 1597) - Ahn Wui (1598)
the Chungchong Navy
- Chung Kuhl (1592 - early 1594)* - Ku Sa-Jik (March 1594 - April 1594) - Yi Soon-Shin (homonym, April 1594 - March 1595) - Yi Gye-Hoon (March 1595) - Seon Keo-Yi (May 1595 - 1596)** - Choe Ho (1596 - July 1597) - Kwon Jun (late 1597) - Oh Eung-Tae (1598)
* Chung Kuhl (1514-1597), absent in the drama, was a navy expert. He was Commander of Right Kyungsang Navy in 1572, Commander of Left Cholla Navy in 1577, Commander of Right Kyungsang Navy again in 1578 and Commander of Right Cholla Navy in 1587. He was Commander of Chungchong and Kyungki Navy between 1592-1594 and he contributed to the victory of Haengju Battle in February 1593 by supplying arrows to General Kwon Yul. (We will see Gen. Kwon from Episode 69.)
We don't see Admiral Chung in the drama, but his name is mentioned one time. Cho Su-Chang (shipbuilding commander, fictional character) said to YSS that his father worked for Admiral Chung Kuhl.
** Seon Keo-Yi (1550-1598) was the best friend of YSS, but totally absent in the drama. He was at the North Frontiers with YSS and fought against the Jurchen in mid-1580's. He was killed at the battle of Ulsan when he fought against Kato Kiyomasa.

It looks like the most of the high ranking commanders of the Chosun military in the war, died in action. Why was their survival rate so low?

We will see Kwon Yul in episode 69? Which general is he? Is he the guy sitting at the head of the table, the guy with the armor like Yi Soon-Shin in the battle, or the guy with the dark armor in the battle?

Is he the guy sitting at the head of the table, the guy with the armor like Yi Soon-Shin in the battle, or the guy with the dark armor in the battle? Kwon Yul in Ep.69 is the old general in black scale armor. If I'm not wrong, the head general is Yi Kwang, Governor of Cholla Province. (I couldn't read well the subtitles indicating historical personnages.) Ep. 69 depicts the so-called "battle" of Yong-In and, as I have forcasted previously, Kwon Yul makes his first appearance at this incident. Kwon Yul and Land Battles

It looks like the most of the high ranking commanders of the Chosun military in the war, died in action. Why was their survival rate so low? It seems that lots of the most brave commanders were killed in battles (especially shotted by guns) while many coward ones fled and survived to post war times.

Concerning the organization of Left Cholla Navy, I reproduce one of my previous postings in "History vs. fiction" thread, completing it with Moreshige's additional comment. Posting of MoreshigeTo augment your awesome definitions, Florel, here are some more of the historical officers under YSS. (not in drama) Kim Gwang-duk (Bo-song gunsu) Bae Hong Rip (Heung-yang hyungam) I see you mention him. Kim In-Young (Yeo-do kwonkwan) Chae Dae-sung (Gunkwan) Bae Ong-rok (Gunkwan) Yi Uhn Ryang (Gunkwan) You mention him too...he appears later in the drama Left Cholla Navy had five land garrisons and five port garrisons under Left Cholla Naval Station. Left Cholla Naval Station was situated at actual... Yosu ( susa, Commander) - the 3rd High rank, Yi Soon-ShinFive land garrisons were Suncheon ( busa, Constable) - the 3rd Low rank, Kwon JunNak-An ( gunsu) - the 4th Low rank, Shin HoBoseong ( gunsu) - the 4th Low rank, Kim Deuk-Gwang Gwang-Yang ( hyungam) - the 6th Low rank, Uh Young-Dam (from Ep. 52) Heung-Yang ( hyungam) - the 6th Low rank, Bae Heung-Rip (YSS's loyal subordinate, but absent in the drama.) Five port garrisons were Bang-Dap ( chumsa) - the 3rd Low rank, Yi Soon-Shin (homonym) Sado ( chumsa) - the 3rd Low rank, Kim WanNokdo ( manho, Captain) - the 4th Low rank, Chung WoonYeodo ( manho, Captain) - Lt. Kim In-Young Balpo ( manho, Captain) - vacant post in early Imjin War, to which Lt. Na Dae-Yong was appointed by deputy Cf. YSS was Captain of Balpo when he was young.

Kim Wan (1546-1607) photo by courtesy of Choko - So called "Monkey Man's great grandson" - Kim Wan was Garrison Commaner ( chumsa) of Sado in Left Cholla Navy. He was also Right Patrol Leader of YSS's fleet. (In the drama, he also undertakes the patrol task.) - It's a fact that he was a lazy man in real history. In the War diary, Admiral YSS complained that his garrison retainment was the worst among five port garrisons (on the 25th February 1592 - lunar) and that he lied to Admiral about his patrol duty without fulfilling it (on the 20 March 1592). - In the drama, he is depicted also as lazy but tactful man. He uses his good brain for saving time and for taking leisure. Of course, his comic character is exaggerated. - In reality, he was a native of Kyungsang Province. But Kim Wan in the drama speaks the dialect of Cholla Province. It's because of the actor's language capacity. - Probably, the real Kim Wan must have been a ferocious warrior in real history. At the battle of Hansan Island he beheaded one Japanese commander and fifteen soldiers. - In 1597, he became a captive at the disastrous battle of Chilchonryang and sent to Japan. But he escaped soon (perhaps between End 1597 and Early 1598 ?) and returned to Chosun. (Yi Young-Nam mentioned it in Episode 3.) - But he didn't join Admiral YSS's navy after his return. He became Senior Magistrate{*my translation of gunsu*} of Ham-an, Kyungsang province. Therefore he stayed on land and his presence in navy in Episodes 1-4 is fictional. - After returning home, he wrote his own war memories. In his statement, he testified the whole story of Chilchonryang Battle and the " extra-ordinary" (read it with pejorative and ironical tone) adventure of Won Kyun.

Another question Florel. If the Japanese were having terrible time on the seas, and they had the overwhelming advantage on land, especially in southern Korea, why didn't they attack on land, the naval bases of the Cholla navies, and deprive them of the naval bases? Admiral Yi's forces were strictly naval in character, he would not have had the capability nor the men to spare to defend the naval bases if the enemy attacked from inland.
So why didn't the Japanese do that, what made them stop from taking all of Cholla province over?

So why didn't the Japanese do that, what made them stop from taking all of Cholla province over? Well, for Cholla province there were local leaders that were actually successful against the Japanese. General Kwon Yul and Kwak Chae-u each had their own base of operations in Cholla. And I think there was actually another. The details of their land victories were just as exciting as YSS naval ones when I read about them.

Florel, thanks so much for the history. It makes watching the show more enjoyable. Your English writing is excellent. I hope I don't offend you by pointing out a certain mistake that you made a couple of times. "Shotted" is not an English word.
especially shot by guns
...they always have great risk of being shot.
I don't know why I felt the need to correct this when there are so many mistakes posted (including some by me).
