Chronology and Battles of the Imjin War (10)6th June 1593 (Kyesa year)- Kwon Yul is appointed Commander-in-Chief (Marshal). Marshal Kwon Yul 14th June- The Japanese starts offensive against Chinju Castle. - Kwon Yul and Seon Geo-Yi are defeated by the Japanese main forces in Ham-an, Kyungsang province. 15th June- 700-800 Japanese ships (500 ships according to YSS) move to Ungpo, Jepo and Angolpo. 16th June- YSS receives an intelligence report about the Japanese movement. 18th June- Gwak Jae-Woo retreats from Chung-am-jin, near Chinju. the 21th June- YSS moves the navy base to Hansan Island and he confronts 700-800 Japanese warships at Kyonnaeryang Strait until 11th July. The Japanese's tentatives to pass Kyonnaeryang fail. Since then, Hansan Island becomes the advanced military post of the Chosun Navy. Hansan Island 22th-29th June84) the 2nd Battle of Chinju (Kyungsang) - Ep. 80 (narration)- attack : Ukida Hideie, Kato Kiyomasa, Konish Yukinaga, Kobayakawa Takakage (united Japanese army) -> 100,000 troops - defence : Kim Chun-Il, Choe Kyung-Hoe, Hwang Jin (army and militia) -> 3,400 troops - Fall of Chinju Castle. The Chosun army and militia are annihilated. - Hwang Jin, Commander of Chungchong army, is killed by a bullet on the 28th June. The Chosunese defense is crumbled after the death of Commander Hwang. Hwang Jin (1550-1593) - the captain who was injured in the Battle of Ichi (Ep. 74) - When the fortress is collapsed, Kim Chun-Il, militia leader and chief defense commander, throws himself into the Nam River with his son. Choe Kyung-Hoe, Commander of Right Kyungsang Army and Yi Jong-In, Constable of Kim-hae, also commit suicide throwing themselves into the river. - Ko Jong-Hoo dies in this battle. He is son of Ko Kyung-Myung, the militia leader who died in the 1st Battle of Keum-san. - Seo Ye-Won, High Constable of Chinju, is beheaded by the Japanese. (* His head was sent to Hideyoshi. The Japanese believed that they killed the famous Kim Shi-Min and fulfilled their bloody vengeance on him for their huge defeat in the 1st Battle of Chinju. In the Japanese ancient Kabuki, Kim Shi-Min and the Turtle Ship appear as monsters. lol) - The 60,000 Chosunese civilians in Chinju are massacred by the Japanese. - Among Japanese officers, Matsui Tomoyuki (spell?) is killed in the battle. - Keyamura Rokusuke is supposed to be killed by the twenty years old Chosunese woman Non-Gae. * About the identity of Ju Non-Gae, there are three arguments : 1. geisha of Chinju. 2. geisha and concubine of Gen. Choe Kyung-Hoe, Commander of Right Kyungsang Army. 3. noble woman from Ju clan of Jang-soo (Cholla Province) who became concubine of Commander Choe Kyung-Hoe. (the most recent theory claimed by Ju clan) "Righteous Rock ( Ui-am)" from which Non-Gae jumped herself into the Nam River while tightly holding Keyamura Rokusuke. Chinju Castle - Chokseok Pavillon - First built in 1241, then rebuilt 8 times. It was burnt again during the Korean War and the actual pavilion was rebuilt in 1960. - Chokseok Pavillon was used as the HQ office in time of war and as a local examination hall in time of peace.

* I made a few of corrections and additions in recent postings concerning the year of 1593. Notably about the damage of the Japanese in the Sea Battle of Ungpo.
===========================================================
Time gap in Ep. 80 : October 1592 - August 1593 - February 1594
===========================================================
28th June 1593 (Kyesa year)
85) the Sea Battle of Yi-gyun-dae, Kyungju (Kyungsang)
- attack : Japanese navy or army ? - defence : Suh In-Chung* (Left Kyungsang Navy)
- Victory of the Left Kyungsang Navy. - The Chosunese blocked the Japanese fleet's proceeding northward on east coasts.
- The Left Kyungsang Navy was not completely annihilated after the flight of Commander Pak Hong in April 1592. They undertook their activities on east coasts. They didn't work in cooperation with other Chosun navies and they fought under Commander of the Left Kyungsang Army, not under the command of YSS. The Left Kyungsang Navy was more involved in land battles than in sea battles (perhaps it would be, partly, because of the fact that they didn't have many warships. Most of them were destroyed by Pak Hong.)
* Suh In-Chung (1554-1610) was a special case of the militia leader who fought both on land and on sea. He raised militia troops in Ulsan on the 10th May 1592. In September 1592, he was appointed Naval leader by Pak Jin, Commander of Lthe eft Kyungsang Army and he won several battles against the Japanese. He was appointed Garrison Commander (chumsa) of Dadaepo in the 2nd June 1592 and Garrison Commander of Busan in October 1594, in March 1596 and in December 1598 again. (Both Dadaepo and Busan belonged to the jurisdiction of the Left Kyungsang Navy, but they were under the Japanese control during the whole period of the Imjin War.)
4th July
- 10,000 Japanese army's showing forces at Kyonnaeryang.
15th July
- The royal court gives approval to YSS about the installation of the navy base on Hansan Island.

What? July and August don't consist of 8 weeks? And was there not a vacancy while you were gone? Yeah, you're right, Bo. July and August have 8 weeks, not 12 or 20 weeks. lol In France, we have the right to take at least five weeks of vacancy. I have six weeks.

Chronology and Battles of the Imjin War (12)1597 (Jung-yu Year)1st January- The royal court receives YSS's memorial in which he requests to give an award to Ahn Wui, Magistrate of Koje, and two soldiers who set fire to a Japanese camp in Busan. 2nd January- The memorial of Yi Won-Ik, Supreme Military Commander, arrives at the royal court. The Supreme Commander says that a soldier of his camp burnt the Japanese camp in Busan. * This incident became one of pretexts (false report, disobedience to the king's order, etc.) of YSS's arrest in February 1597. But Ahn Wui really set the Japanese camp on fire and he wasn't punished by reason of the false report. (perhaps a coincidental small military action both in army and in navy and a misunderstanding between them ?) So it seems that the king was just searching a reason to arrest YSS. 11th January- Kim Eung-Suh, Commander of the Right Kyungsang army is informed about Kato Kiyomasa's arrival in Chosun from Yoshira, a Japanese spy sent by Konishi Yukinaga. - Ep. 87Kim Eung-Suh (1564-1624) Yoshira (the Japanese double spy) 12th January- An officer of Kato Kiyomasa lands on Seosaengpo in Ulsan with 150 ships. 13th January- Kato Kiyomasa lands on Busan with his troops in 130 ships. - Ep. 8714th January- Kwon Yul informs YSS about the arrival of Kato Kiyomasa. - Ep. 8719th January- The royal court receives the memorial of Commander Kim Eung-Suh about Kato's arrival. 21th January- The royal court orders YSS to attack Busan. 22th January- Won Kyun sends a memorial to the court, in which he criticizes YSS's strategy and he insists that the Chosun navy should take the offensive against the Japanese in Busan and he says he can do it. - King Sunjo decides to return Won Kyun to the navy. 23th January- Kim Eung-Suh, Commander of the Right Kyungsang Army, sends another memorial in which he said that Konishi Yukinaga complaint the Chosunese lost an opportunity, that he offered, to capture Kato. 27th January- Yun Du-Su impeaches YSS. He recommends Won Kyun as Supreme Navy Commander. 28th January- King Sunjo appoints Won Kyun as Commander of the Right Kyungsang Navy and Supreme Navy Commander of Kyungsang province. But this appointment is not realized. 2th February- YSS sets sail from Hansan Island. 6th February- King Sunjo orders to arrest YSS. - Ep. 877th February- YSS is discharged and Won Kyun is appointed Supreme Commander of three provinces. - Ep. 8710th February- YSS sets sail from Jangmunpo in order to take a military operation in Busan without knowing his discharge. The Right Kyungsang Army Commander Kim Eung-Suh accompanies him. The Japanese do not dare to take action against YSS's fleet. This military operation in Busan continues until 11th February 1597. * This supposed "second Sea Battle of Busan" (or more exactly "second naval operation in Busan") has been generally unknown and it's discovered by recent researches. It's confirmed by memorials of Marshal Kwon Yul and of Commander Kim Eung-Suh, recorded in the Royal Annals. The drama follows the old arguments that YSS didn't want to fight against the Japanese in early 1597. - Forces of the Chosun Navy : 63 warships. - Forces of the Japanese : 70 warships. 12th February- YSS returns to Hansan Island. On his way back, YSS attacks the Japanese at Gaduk Island because they killed one Chosunese shepherd and kidnapped five soldiers on a boat. - According to Kim Eung-Suh, 17 surrendered Japaneses soldiers under his command participated in this military action. - YSS receives the news of his dismissal and is arrested by a royal messenger on his flagship. 17th February- Kwon Yul's memorial about YSS's attack on Busan arrives in the royal court. (Marshal Kwon will send more reports about it during the month of February.) 26th February- YSS under arrest leaves for Seoul and Won Kyun replaces him. - Ep. 8828th February- Won Kyun writes a memorial to the court, in which he criticizes YSS's attack on Busan in early February and he asks to punish YSS's sub-commanders. This memorial will arrive at the court on the 20th March. 4th March- YSS arrives in Seoul. He is jailed during one month and tortured. - Ep. 88-89
